Chapter 365 Crossbow Attack
Chapter 365 Crossbow Attack
After thinking it through, Xu Xiaoyan quickened her pace. She needed to find a secluded place to take out the solar-powered electric vehicle from her spatial storage.
Then drive to a place where no one knows you and hide until the chaos is over and social order is restored.
She saw a cluster of abandoned buildings ahead and thought she could retrieve the car from her spatial storage, then head west into the mountains to find one—
Suddenly, she stopped in her tracks; someone was following her!
Xu Xiaoyan tried to quicken her pace, and the footsteps behind her quickened as well; when she slowed down, the footsteps behind her slowed down as well, and there was more than one person behind her!
When did it start? From the moment she left the entrance of the residential complex? From the moment she stood in front of the empty water room, lost in thought? Or from the moment she turned and walked down this street?
You can't turn around at this moment. Turning around would reveal her alertness and let the other party know that she has already discovered you.
She slowly slipped her right hand into her pocket, her fingers touching the folding knife she always carried.
If there was only one person, using a knife would be fine, but with more than one person, she silently released the hilt of the knife, thinking that it would be more appropriate to use a precision crossbow.
Xu Xiaoyan turned a corner, and the footsteps behind her slowed down. She needed to find a place that could conceal her figure and attract people's attention.
After thinking it through, she quickened her pace, but instead of running towards an open area, she slipped into the shadows of the row of buildings along the street.
There was a building ahead, taller than the ones she had passed before, with a recessed section in its facade. Without hesitation, she turned into it, her figure instantly swallowed by the darkness.
She leaned against the wall, her breathing extremely low, facing the street as she waited.
The footsteps followed, getting closer and closer, and then the sounds stopped right where she had just turned in, about seven or eight meters away.
Then she saw the full picture of the people who were following her.
Three people were standing on the gray-white open ground outside the doorway.
The one in the middle was the tallest, about 1.8 meters tall, and he was holding an axe in his left hand. There was something black and sticky on the axe blade.
The one on the left is shorter, but also quite sturdy. He's holding a kitchen knife in his right hand, with a few dark stains on the blade—I don't know if it's rust or something else.
The one on the right is the thinnest, holding a hammer with the handle wrapped in layers of black tape, probably for grip.
An axe, a kitchen knife, a hammer! Xu Xiaoyan's fingers clenched silently in the darkness.
All three of them were carrying weapons, and they specifically targeted lone women like her. This group was clearly planning to kill and rob her!
If she didn't have some special skills, she would most likely have lost her life here today.
She couldn't wait any longer. With a thought, Xu Xiaoyan silently brought the precision crossbow in her hand.
She raised the crossbow, pressed her right eye against it, and looked through the scope in thermal imaging mode, where all heat sources were converted into varying shades of red.
The silhouettes of the three people were dazzlingly bright in the lenses.
The head is the warmest part, almost white; the torso is slightly darker, a bright red; and the extremities are cooler, a deep red.
Their faces were turned toward her, probably because they had heard something, or perhaps they just instinctively felt that she should be hiding somewhere in the darkness.
It's now!
Her finger rested on the trigger, and as she pressed the button, the crossbow emitted a very faint hum, and five arrows shot out side by side from below the crossbow, leaving the bowstring simultaneously.
Five streaks of silver light flashed through the darkness, and almost simultaneously, three muffled thuds rang out.
The first arrow pierced the shoulder of the middle man, and the axe in his hand clattered to the ground.
The second and third bullets simultaneously struck the man on the left in the chest and abdomen, causing him to stagger backward.
The cleaver slipped from his hand, the blade bounced on the ground with a crisp metallic clang.
The fourth arrow grazed the arm of the man on the right, and the fifth arrow pierced his outer thigh with precision.
The hammer fell from his loosened fingers and hit the ground with a dull thud.
All three men wore expressions of shock, their mouths slightly agape, their eyes wide, searching the darkness for the direction from which the arrow had come.
The tallest man in the middle looked down at the arrow in his shoulder, then looked up again, his expression changing from shock to confusion:
Why would someone own a gun in a country where guns are prohibited? And how could they fire so many rounds?
Xu Xiaoyan raised an eyebrow; she was very satisfied with the result.
The automatic aiming function of thermal imaging is the most worry-free for her; she doesn't have to worry about aiming or calculating wind speed and distance.
The red outline in the scope will automatically lock onto the target; she just needs to press a button.
She stood motionless in the shadows of the doorway, holding her crossbow.
The three people's bodies began to sway. The anesthetic took effect faster than she expected, probably because the arrowhead had penetrated directly into the muscle, and the drug spread rapidly through the bloodstream.
The man in the middle suddenly lost his balance, his knees buckled, and he fell to his knees. Then he lunged forward and landed face down on the dusty cement floor.
The one on the left clutched his chest, making a muffled gurgling sound, then tilted his body to one side and lay on the ground.
The one on the right tried to back away, but the arrow in his thigh made it difficult for him to move. After staggering a couple of steps, he crashed his back into a trash can on the side of the street.
The plastic bucket made a loud bang, and he slid down the side of the bucket, his head hanging in front of his chest, and he didn't move.
She put the crossbow into her spatial storage and stepped out of the shadows of the doorway.
Three people lay sprawled in the moonlight, an axe, a kitchen knife, and a hammer scattered around them.
Xu Xiaoyan walked over and kicked the sole of the middle person's shoe, but there was no reaction.
She used her toes to push the axe aside, squatted down, picked it up, and the handle still retained the warmth of the man's palm; it was damp with sweat.
She put away the axe, kitchen knife, and hammer, then her gaze fell on the backpack carried by the person on her right.
A black backpack, not new, with worn-out corners and a red rope tied to the zipper, probably for marking.
She took the backpack off the man's shoulder, unzipped it, and the contents were clearly visible in the moonlight.
A dozen water tickets were neatly stacked together, bound together with a rubber band. The tickets were still very new, without any signs of being soaked in water or rubbed by sweaty hands.
Several packets of oatmeal, 500 grams each, were still sealed intact. She was too lazy to check the production date, since it was edible anyway.
There were also some odds and ends: half a pack of tissues, a lighter, a few hard candies, and a crumpled piece of paper.
There was an address written on it. She glanced at it, didn't recognize it, and casually stuffed it back into her bag.
