Chapter 282 Safe
Chapter 282 Safe
Her fingers unconsciously clenched the hem of her clothes, her heart pounding uncontrollably. Jiang Yichen's gaze was exceptionally sharp in the darkness, like a cheetah poised to pounce.
He gently patted my shoulder, signaling me to get ready.
"I'll go first and meet you." His voice was almost inaudible, yet it carried an undeniable power.
Before he finished speaking, his figure had already leaped up like a ghost, grabbed the edge of the wall with both hands, and landed steadily on the other side of the wall with a flip. The movement was clean and swift, without making a sound.
I held my breath and watched his figure disappear into the darkness, a complex mix of emotions welling up inside me—nervousness, anticipation, and above all, an indescribable dependence.
Not long after, he reappeared above the wall and reached out his hand to me.
I took a deep breath, grabbed his hand, and used his strength to climb over the wall.
He steadily supported my waist, his hands warm and strong, and gently placed me on the ground, his movements as tender as if he were handling a fragile treasure.
In the darkness, his gaze remained calm and resolute, as if everything was under his control. My heart skipped a beat, and a warm feeling welled up inside me, as if I were being gently enveloped by something soft.
"Are you alright?" he asked in a low voice, his voice tinged with concern.
I shook my head, a slight smile playing on my lips: "It's nothing."
He didn't say anything more, just gently squeezed my hand, then let go, gesturing for me to continue. We walked one after the other, close to the wall, towards the main building of the old house.
The night breeze brushed against my cheeks, carrying a slight chill, yet it made me feel incredibly clear-headed.
Just then, the phone in my pocket vibrated.
I quickly pulled out my phone, and the screen displayed a message from Xu Sisi: "The patrolling bodyguards just passed through the gate. You have five minutes."
I glanced at Jiang Yichen, who nodded, signaling me to continue. We walked around a flowerbed and hid behind a tall sycamore tree. Not far away, the main building of the old house looked particularly eerie in the moonlight, its windows tightly shut, like countless eyes watching us from the darkness.
"The basement entrance is in the backyard; we have to go around there," Jiang Yichen said in a low voice, his eyes scanning the surroundings warily and attentively.
At that moment, I suddenly couldn't help but think of my grandmother. Although she had been discharged from the hospital, she was still worried about this matter, and her health had not been very good.
My phone vibrated again; it was a voice message from Little Sweetie: "Everything's normal outside, be careful."
I quickly replied, "Received, keep in touch."
Jiang Yichen glanced at me, his eyes carrying a hint of inquiry.
I said in a low voice, "Everything is normal outside, we can continue."
We continued along the base of the wall, our steps as light as cats', afraid of disturbing anything. The night wind still whispered in my ears, carrying a slight chill, yet it made me feel incredibly clear-headed.
Just then, a series of footsteps suddenly came from ahead.
Jiang Yichen quickly pulled me aside and hid in the shadows. My heart started racing, and I gripped his sleeve tightly, holding my breath and not daring to make a sound.
A bodyguard walked past us, his flashlight beam sweeping across our hiding place without stopping. Only when the footsteps faded into the distance did Jiang Yichen release my hand and whisper, "Let's go."
We continued forward and finally circled around to the backyard. The entrance to the basement was not far away, a heavy iron door tightly closed, with a rusty lock hanging on it.
Officer Zhang joined us with a team of police officers. He looked serious and said, "Everyone, be careful. The Jin family's old mansion is not easy to deal with. Their bodyguards are all professionally trained and equipped with a lot of advanced equipment."
The atmosphere was tense throughout the journey, with everyone on high alert.
Jiang Yichen's bodyguards also quietly joined the team. They were tall and straight with sharp eyes, giving people a sense of security.
At that moment, near the Jin family's old residence, Officer Zhang signaled his men to quietly surround the area to avoid alerting the enemy.
Now, the night is deep, and the area around the old house is quiet, with only the occasional bark of a dog, which sends chills down one's spine.
Jiang Yichen and I followed closely behind the police team, our hearts pounding uncontrollably, our eyes fixed on the direction of the old house.
With each step I took, I could almost hear my own heart pounding.
At Officer Zhang's command, the police officers acted swiftly and stormed into the Jin family's old house.
However, as soon as they entered the gate, they were detected by the Jin family's surveillance cameras, and the alarm sounded throughout the entire old house.
A commotion suddenly erupted inside the old house as the Jin family's bodyguards rushed out of various rooms, attempting to resist, but the well-trained police quickly subdued them.
We were almost at the basement. Jiang Yichen took a thin wire from his pocket and gently inserted it into the keyhole, his movements practiced and swift. A few seconds later, the lock clicked open. He gently pushed open the iron door, gesturing for me to follow.
I took a deep breath and followed him into the basement. A damp, musty smell hit me in the darkness, making me frown. My heart pounded, my fingers unconsciously clenched the hem of my clothes, yet my heart was filled with determination.
In the basement, damp air, carrying a strong musty smell, assaulted the senses, creating an invisible sense of oppression that made breathing difficult. Dim light streamed down from overhead bulbs, casting dappled shadows. Shelves were piled high with dusty boxes and miscellaneous items, as if no one had set foot there for years.
Jiang Yichen and I held our breath and searched the basement quietly.
Suddenly, my gaze fell on an old wooden crate in the corner. Several yellowed labels were pasted on the crate, with the words "Jin Family Accounts" scrawled on them. My heart pounded, my fingers trembled slightly, and I pointed at the crate, whispering, "There!"
Jiang Yichen quickly walked over, squatted down, and gently opened the box. Inside were piles of documents, ledgers, and several yellowed remittance slips. He quickly flipped through a few pages, a cold glint in his eyes: "This is the evidence we're looking for."
I nodded, a complex mix of emotions welling up inside me—excitement at finding evidence, yet also tension about the impending danger. Just then, heavy footsteps approached from outside, accompanied by low, muffled conversation.
"Someone's coming!" I whispered, my heart pounding in my chest.
Jiang Yichen quickly closed the suitcase, grabbed my hand, and led me behind a nearby shelf. The dust on the shelf was shaken down by our movement, and a pungent smell filled the air.
I clung tightly to Jiang Yichen, my fingers unconsciously gripping his sleeve, my palms sweating, my heart pounding in my ears, as if the whole world had been reduced to this rapid rhythm.
The footsteps grew closer, accompanied by the beam of a flashlight sweeping across the shelves.
I held my breath, my body trembling slightly, as if even the air had frozen.
Jiang Yichen gently placed his hand on mine, his fingertips applying slight pressure, as if silently telling me, "Don't be afraid, I'm here." Although I relaxed a little after hearing that, my heart was still pounding so hard it felt like it was about to burst out of my chest.
The beam of the flashlight lingered for a few seconds in front of the shelf where we were hiding before moving away, and the footsteps gradually faded into the distance.
Once it was completely quiet outside, Jiang Yichen gently released my hand and whispered, "It's safe now."
