Chapter 12 Sugarcane Sugar Production
Chapter 12 Sugarcane Sugar Production
Because her grandparents trusted her, Yufei had a lot more freedom.
However, she hasn't been in the mood to travel around collecting crops lately.
Instead, they were researching how to make sugar, and in the end, Yufei chose the traditional method.
She didn't know how, but Granny Chun said she had helped the previous owner of the space with it.
So, based on Granny Chun's memories, the two of them began to try making sugar.
First, the sugarcane is pressed into juice using a juicer made by the previous owner of the space.
Even with the most juicy sugarcane, 10 stalks only yielded enough juice to fill a washbasin.
Next, filter the squeezed juice through cheesecloth, and then boil the filtered juice in a pot.
Simmer until it changes color and turns into syrup, then cool.
Yufei picked up the candy, took a bite, frowned, and shook her head at Granny Chun. "It's burnt and has a slightly bitter taste."
Yufei put down the brown sugar in her hand. Granny Chun clearly didn't believe her and picked up a piece to put in her mouth.
Even after giving it to her, she frowned. Her good manners prevented her from spitting out the candy, so she ate it anyway, still frowning.
"Let's start over," Granny Chun said calmly after finishing her meal.
So they got back to work, but this time they learned from their previous experience.
Paying close attention to the heat and time, Yufei boiled the sugarcane juice into a thick syrup. She poured it out, let it cool and solidify before tasting it.
It wasn't burnt anymore, but the solidified candy had many tiny air pockets, which Yufei, a perfectionist, rejected again.
"Come again!"
After countless attempts, Yufei had Chun Mama write down the time and steps of each attempt on paper.
Finally, on the 52nd attempt, I succeeded.
Yufei gazed at the perfectly square piece of brown sugar, as if she could see a reddish glow emanating from it. She put the sugar in her mouth, and the sweet taste blossomed in her mouth as it melted.
This brown sugar has a perfect level of sweetness, not cloying, and even a hint of fresh, grassy sugarcane flavor. It's absolutely delicious!
"Granny Chun, have a taste," Yufei said, offering a piece of brown sugar to Granny Chun's lips.
Granny Chun didn't refuse; she put the candy Yufei gave her into her mouth and then squinted her eyes.
No one knew that behind her serious expression was actually a sweet tooth.
And this candy she made with Xiaoyufei was the most delicious candy she had ever tasted in her life.
Hmm... the one made by the previous owner is second.
After Yufei succeeded on her first try, her confidence soared. The two of them spent four or five days, and the outside world took 4.5 hours to process almost all of the sugarcane she had grown.
More than 60 jin of brown sugar were produced, with a high sugar yield; basically, 10 jin of sugarcane yielded 5 jin of sugar.
After finishing, Yufei came out of the space, tidied up the dishes her grandmother wanted to prepare, and waited patiently for her grandparents to arrive.
The next day, Yufei woke up naturally; her grandparents had already gone out.
Grandma bought a few pieces of fabric with her favorite patterns in the county town, and she's been busy turning them into finished garments these past few days.
Yufei really wanted to draw some of the clothing styles from her past life to make clothes for her grandmother.
But she…-_-|| can't draw. If she ever gets the chance to learn to draw again, she'll definitely draw all those beautiful clothes from her past life, if she can still remember them ⊙﹏⊙
However, she wasn't sure if it was just her imagination, but she felt that her memory seemed to have improved since she was five years old. Some things from her past life that were previously vague to her were becoming increasingly clear.
She believed that she might one day become the academic genius she admired in her past life.
I'm starting to get a little excited! ⊙▽⊙
Today she wanted to buy some chicks, ducklings, goslings, piglets, and the like. There were no animals in her space, and she was craving meat, especially since meat was much more valuable than vegetables in this era!
Yufei planned to take a stroll in the village today. She came out of her house along a narrow path, on one side of which was a small river, about one or two meters wide. On the other side of the river lived Yufei's great-uncle and his children.
Walk to the left and you'll pass several houses before you reach Grandma Chunhua's house.
Turning right leads to the street, where the village vendors sell their goods. Turning left from there and walking a short distance further brings you to the embankment. On the other side of the embankment flows the famous Yuan River.
Yufei's grandfather works on the dike, so Yufei decided to go to the village street mainly to see if they had any chicks or ducklings she wanted to buy. She could only ask Uncle Wang at the pig farm for piglets.
The village streets were rather quiet today, since the township primary school hadn't let out yet, and the adults were still busy working in the fields.
There was a small shop on the village street. Yufei went in and looked around. They had Jianlibao (a popular Chinese soft drink), watermelon bubble gum, Taizi milk (a type of milk drink), spicy meat, spicy strips, spicy chips, and snails that cost 5 mao (0.5 yuan) a bag.
These are all so many memories, Yufei sighed involuntarily.
Wait a minute! Only this many tiny screws, 5 cents a pack?
She worked so hard to sell the white jade radishes for only 1 cents a pound, even though they were only 2 cents a pound from Uncle Zhu.
Yufei couldn't help but wonder...did she sell it too cheaply? -_-
Oh well, we've already set this price. She'll raise it when the contract expires!
But she can also make spicy snails. She brought back a lot of snails and other conch when she was preparing loach and eel.
In her past life, when she was in her twenties, she had basically revealed all sorts of spicy snacks and their recipes.
She loves to eat, so the recipe for spicy snails should be similar to that for spicy crayfish. She's made spicy crayfish herself, so she could research the recipe in her space and maybe even sell it.
"That'll make a lot of money," Yufei thought happily.
So she bought a bag, and ate it as she walked out of the convenience store.
Next to the convenience store was a seed shop, and Yufei's eyes lit up instantly.
This shop doesn't have a huge stock of seeds, but they're all things that people in rural areas use.
She took a packet of watermelon seeds, a packet of corn seeds, a packet of camellia seeds, a packet of tea tree seeds, and basically every type of seed available there.
Next to the seed shop was a fertilizer shop, but this wasn't particularly useful to Yufei, so she just walked past it.
The next shops were restaurants and hardware stores, which had nothing to do with Yufei. It wasn't until she was almost at the end of the street that she came across a poultry shop.
Yufei breathed a sigh of relief; thank goodness! So she bought 20 chicks, mostly hens, 20 ducklings, and 10 geese.
"Little Yufei, your grandma sent you to buy poultry?" The poultry shop owner was clearly acquainted with Yufei's grandma; they must have chatted about Yufei before.
Yufei didn't have much of a memory of her, but that didn't stop her from calling out, "Auntie, that's right, Grandma's been a bit busy lately, so she sent me to buy some little chickens and ducks."
Yufei pretends to be cute
(Yufei said angrily: You're the one pretending to be cute! I'm cute as I am, I don't need to pretend!)
"Yufei is so capable!" The auntie quickly packed Yufei's bag, telling her to ask her grandmother to catch more earthworms for the little animals to eat, so they could grow up healthy and strong. She also explained some methods for raising the animals to Yufei.
Yufei puffed out her little chest and said to her aunt, "Don't worry, Auntie, I've remembered everything! I'll tell Grandma carefully. Auntie, I'm leaving now, bye-bye!"
Then Yufei waved goodbye to her with her chubby little hand.
