Chapter 25 Escape from Danger
Chapter 25 Escape from Danger
The corpse beetles retreated into the dark corners like a receding tide, and the blood corpses seemed to have lost their souls.
A trail of steel cable suddenly flashed above Zhang Qiling and the blood corpse, followed by a roguish and amused reminder: "Mute, tilt your head!"
Upon hearing the familiar voice, Zhang Qiling instinctively turned his head to the right.
The next moment, a series of rapid and rhythmic gunshots swept towards the blood corpse's head.
Da da da da——
With a smile playing on his lips, Black Glasses slid down the steel cable from the beam at the top of the tomb. He held a small submachine gun that was firing steadily in his right hand. Using the momentum of his slide, he took advantage of the blood corpse's momentary inability to react and knocked it off Zhang Qiling.
"How's that, mute? I arrived just in time, didn't I!"
Although he said that, Black Eyes didn't expect Zhang Qiling to reply at all. His gaze behind his sunglasses was fixed on the blood corpse in front of him, and he was a little puzzled.
Strange, why is this blood corpse so afraid of death that it's not charging forward anymore? It's like a mascot!
Zhang Qiling glanced down at his own blood-soaked flesh and bones, feeling that Hei Yanjing's question was pointless, so he simply kept quiet and obediently let Wu Xie and Fatty Wang support him.
"Wu Xie!" Wu Sansheng ran out of a tomb passage, seemingly also covered in stings from the suddenly rampaging swarm of corpse beetles. "You brat, are you alright?!"
Looking at his anxious third uncle, Wu Xie felt a lump in his throat. He let Wu Sansheng pull him around, examining him from left to right, but he couldn't help but say, with a mix of grievance and relief, "Third Uncle, I'm fine..."
"Third Master!" Da Pan straightened up slightly, and when he saw Wu Sansheng, he breathed a sigh of relief. It was good that he was alright.
"I'm so glad you're all alright!"
Wu Sansheng nodded, avoiding Da Pan's wounds and patting him on the shoulder. Then, he looked at Zhang Qiling, who was pale-faced, and was about to speak when he caught sight of the blood corpse not far away that was not attacking the group for the time being.
Wu Sansheng felt a wave of fear and unease, and the words that were about to come out of his mouth changed to: "Xiao Xie, go help the young man, let's get out of here first!"
"Ok!"
So, the group remained cautious and began to explore the passage in the north of the ancient tomb again, this time with Wu Sansheng leading the way and Hei Yanjing bringing up the rear.
What puzzled everyone even more was that they did not encounter any further danger. The tomb passage they were walking through was clean and quiet, as if the chaos they had encountered earlier was just an illusion.
However, the lingering pain from the wounds on his body reminded everyone that this was simply impossible and unusual!
The corpse beetles that had previously swarmed out almost entirely wouldn't have attacked people without reason, nor would they have retreated without warning. The blood corpse was no exception...
Could it be related to that sudden roar earlier?
Just as everyone was lost in thought, Wu Xie, who had relaxed a little, suddenly realized that they seemed to be missing one person: "Third Uncle, where is Da Kui?"
Upon hearing this, Wu Sansheng snapped out of his thoughts. A dark glint flashed in his eyes; he had known his nephew would ask, so he paused, feigning sadness, before lying, "We couldn't save him..."
Poor Wu Xie, who had no doubts about Wu Sanxing's words.
The next second, Wu Xie suddenly fell silent, his head drooping, his expression unreadable.
Wu Xie is not yet accustomed to life and death, nor is he able to calmly accept the sudden disappearance or death of living people. He only feels his heart clenching uncontrollably.
This time, Mingyan was so skilled, and Da Kui, though timid, was someone who followed his third uncle and must have had plenty of experience. So how did they all end up gone...?
Zhang Qiling sensed that the person beside him had suddenly become depressed. It was a long time since he had seen such a person. He thought that the longer he lived, the more his sentimentality in the underground world would disappear. But today... he wondered how long Wu Xie's sincerity and natural emotions could last.
"Hey, little naive one, don't overthink it. Life and death are predestined, and wealth and honor are determined by fate!" Fatty Wang, who was supporting Zhang Qiling on the other side, also sensed Wu Xie's emotions. Perhaps at some point, he shared the same thoughts as Zhang Qiling!
"In my thirty-odd years of life, I've done my fair share of treasure hunting. Every time, if I can escape and save my life, I'll burn some incense for my ancestors. But if I ever die, I'll accept it. After all, valuing life is one thing, but surviving is another. It's better to relax!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Fatty Wang laughed. If what he said were useful, he wouldn't call himself Wu Xie Xiao Tianzhen!
Wu Xie smiled, though it was a forced smile. He hadn't expected so many things to happen in such a short time... but he still listened to what Fatty Wang said and understood his good intentions. He looked at Fatty Wang and nodded gratefully: "I'm fine, Fatty, thank you!"
Wu Sansheng turned to look at his nephew's expression, which was more like a forced smile than a genuine one, and sighed inwardly. He then turned to Wang Pangzi and asked, "May I ask who this gentleman is?"
"Third Master, right!" Fatty Wang chuckled, took Zhang Qiling's arm, and gave a perfunctory fist salute. "I am Fatty Wang. People in the underworld call me Master Fatty, but you can just call me Fatty!"
"Fatty, you flatter me. My nephew has certainly received a lot of help from you along the way. Thank you so much!"
"No, no, no!" Fatty Wang waved his hand, his fleshy face forming a polite but cunning smile.
Seeing this, Wu Sansheng gave up his idea of finding out more. Anyway, there would be no further contact after he left, so he might as well just let it go since he had already accepted the favor.
"There shouldn't be any danger around here for the time being. Let's stop and rest for a bit!"
Finally, they were able to stop, and everyone found a place to adjust, but in order to prevent any unexpected situations, they consciously did not stray too far apart.
Looking at the surrounding environment, it should be a partition room that is common when the outer hall connects to the tomb chamber. Generally, there shouldn't be any traps or mechanisms here.
"Third Master, do you still remember that voice from before?"
Black Glasses sat down to the left of Zhang Qiling, not far away, opposite Wu Sansheng. Now that they had rested, they naturally wanted to sort out the strange things that had happened earlier.
Wu Sansheng nodded in agreement. After thinking for a while, he said, "Brother and the others were surrounded at that time. Even if we could have arrived in time to rescue them, given the number of those corpse beetles, plus that blood corpse, we might not have been able to rescue them and we might have been trapped inside as well. Unless we could fly, it would undoubtedly have been an unsolvable dead end."
"But after that sound, the corpse beetles retreated, and the blood corpses seemed to be wary of something. We were able to get here so easily that I almost thought this was an empty tomb!"
The man in black glasses still had a smile on his lips, seemingly very interested, but a hint of doubt flashed in his eyes behind the sunglasses.
"In other words, it was that voice that scared away the corpse beetles and blood corpses, which allowed us to escape successfully!" Wu Xie and the others also realized what was going on, but then they were enveloped in a fog of confusion again.
"But logically speaking, the things in this tomb are either traps set by the tomb owner or people who came to dig for tombs like us. It would be good enough if either of them didn't leave us here. Why would they want to help us escape?"
"That sound didn't seem like a mechanism, but rather like some kind of large, ferocious beast. We've been so clean along the way, we're probably in its territory, which is why the blood corpse and those corpse beetles don't dare to come close." After Da Pan's analysis, everyone agreed that this was the most likely explanation.
"Could it be that the tomb owner had a hobby of keeping pets?" After thinking about it carefully, Fatty Wang suddenly felt that something was wrong. He slapped his forehead and his eyes widened. "Then, according to this, we are not only not safe, but we may also fall into the hands of that thing!"
Wu Xie had some understanding of the habits of those large beasts. He shook his head and said, "It's unlikely. If what Pan Zi said is true, then this place is already its territory. It would not tolerate anyone trespassing, and it certainly wouldn't have waited until now."
"So, it doesn't mean us any harm? Then what kind of beast is it that can live in this underground tomb and also intimidate corpse beetles and blood corpses?"
Everyone was puzzled.
