Chapter 167 She was terrified
As Cheng Zheng left the investigation room, he was still thinking about the letter Lin Shuyao had written to him.
He wanted to see the contents of the letter with his own eyes, but the investigation team certainly wouldn't give it to him now. If he asked, it would only reveal that he hadn't read the letter at all.
After much thought, he had no choice but to suppress the impulse.
Fortunately, based on his conversation with the investigation team today, the contents of the letter should be roughly as he guessed.
Thinking of the letter, Cheng Zheng also thought of the anonymous whistleblower.
The letter must have been given to the investigation team by this person.
Moreover, it's easy to deduce that the person who labeled Lin Shuyao an enemy agent had a past conflict with him or Lin Shuyao.
Su Wan could be considered, but she is still on her way back to Beijing from Yuncheng, so she can be ruled out as a suspect for the time being.
That leaves only one.
Cheng Zheng took a detour and went to the gatehouse.
"Master Zhou, let me check the recent mail collection register."
People who come to collect their mail will register their names.
Old Zhou handed him the roster. Cheng Zheng flipped to last week's page, his gaze fixed on a certain name, a shadow passing over his eyes.
As expected, the candidate was the same one he had guessed.
They opened his mail without permission and even reported his wife. Fine, he'll remember this grudge!
"Representative! Representative! Zhao Tiemei has come to your office with some people! Please go and see!"
Cheng Zheng had just come out of the reception room when he ran into Assistant Zheng, who had come looking for him.
Upon hearing this, his face darkened, and he turned and strode towards his office.
Assistant Zheng followed nervously behind.
On the way, many employees glanced at Cheng Zheng when they saw him.
Some were evasive, while others were blatant; in short, they couldn't hide the schadenfreude in their eyes.
The factory workers who used to be close to Lin Shuyao have all been called in for talks in the past few days.
The technical department was the first to be affected.
At this juncture, don't expect these former colleagues to speak well of her; it would be quite kind of them if they didn't say anything bad about her.
Fortunately, Lin Shuyao was well-liked in the department. Li Wei, Wang Qiang, and the others all said that she was a hard worker and did not notice anything unusual.
Except for Zhao Tiemei.
Cheng Zheng didn't know what Zhao Tiemei said to the investigation team, but it certainly wasn't anything good.
However, she probably doesn't have any other evidence at the moment, otherwise the investigation team wouldn't have just called him in for questioning.
As for Su Wan, he had already given her a warning.
He wouldn't care about any camaraderie if anyone dared to speak recklessly.
Anyone who touches his wife will be absolutely tortured to death by him!
Cheng Zheng frowned, a fierce glint flashing in his eyes. The employees around him who had been observing him were all frightened and looked away when they met his cold gaze, no longer daring to stare at him.
Assistant Zheng said, "Representative, while you were away, the factory was talking about Comrade Shen Qing, and the things they said were very unpleasant."
"What are they saying?" Cheng Zheng asked without stopping.
Assistant Zheng's eyes darted around, hesitant to speak: "They said... they said Comrade Shen used his beauty to bewitch you, extracted a lot of confidential information from you, and then ran away... They said you were hunting all day but ended up getting pecked in the eye by the eagle..."
Ha. A honey trap, huh?
Cheng Zheng smiled bitterly to himself.
That seems to be true; he was indeed so infatuated with her that he didn't notice her unusual mood in the days leading up to their marriage registration.
"Representative, did Comrade Shen really impersonate someone else?"
This cannot be denied. Cheng Zheng hummed in agreement: "Her real name is Lin Shuyao, and she was an educated youth from the same village as Shen Qing. However, she never leaked any confidential information from beginning to end."
Assistant Zheng breathed a sigh of relief: "I knew Comrade Shen—oh no, Comrade Lin—couldn't be an enemy agent. What enemy agent would help us deal with the Soviet experts?"
Unfortunately, those people are brainless; they couldn't even deduce something so simple.
Cheng Zheng returned to his office and stood at the door.
The door was open.
The inside was a complete mess.
Drawers were pulled out and thrown haphazardly on the floor, documents were scattered everywhere, some with footprints, some torn in half. The materials on the bookshelf were rummaged through and scattered, several thick technical manuals were torn into stacks and thrown aside like waste paper.
In the middle of the room, Zhao Tiemei stood with her hands on her hips, chin held high, constantly giving orders to the security personnel:
"Search! Search thoroughly! Don't miss any suspicious evidence!" She pointed to the cabinet, "Especially inside! All those boxes and chests, knock on them, listen, see if there are any hidden compartments! These spies are masters at hiding things!"
As he spoke, he grabbed something at random, didn't even look at it, and slammed it to the ground.
Grab it again, throw it again.
A pen rolled to her feet, and she stepped on it, grinding it hard with her toe as if she were crushing something dirty.
"Zhao Tiemei, what are you doing!"
Assistant Zheng stormed in, his face flushed with anger, his fists clenched so tightly they cracked.
Zhao Tiemei raised her eyelids slightly, casually brushed off non-existent dust from her hands, and curled her lips into a smile: "Director Zhou asked me to bring the security team to assist in the investigation. As the fiancé of an enemy agent, isn't it normal to search his office? Otherwise, how can we find evidence of the enemy agent betraying the country?"
"You—you call that a search? You're deliberately causing trouble!" Assistant Zheng was trembling with anger.
"Sabotage? Who saw it?" Zhao Tiemei chuckled, slowly turning her head to look at the two security guards. "Did you see it?"
"I didn't see it." One of them immediately shook his head.
"We're conducting a normal search," another echoed, a fawning smile on his face.
Zhao Tiemei nodded in satisfaction, then turned to look at Assistant Zheng, her smile carrying a hint of smug arrogance: "Did you hear that, Assistant Zheng? I'm just following orders from my superiors. If you have any objections, you can go and talk to Director Zhou."
After she finished speaking, her gaze passed over Assistant Zheng and landed on Cheng Zheng, her eyes filled with provocation: "Representative, shouldn't you be prepared to cooperate with the search?"
"Oh right, I just found a photo."
Before Cheng Zheng could react, Zhao Tiemei pulled a photo out of her pocket and waved it in front of him. The photo was of Cheng Zheng and Lin Shuyao, their heads close together, smiling happily and looking at the camera.
Cheng Zheng's gaze fell on the photo, and his Adam's apple bobbed slightly.
"Give it back to me." His voice wasn't loud, but it was as cold as ice.
Zhao Tiemei was stunned for a moment, then sneered, and right in front of him, she pinched both sides of the photo with her hands.
"Rip—"
The photo was split in the middle, with Cheng Zheng's face and Lin Shuyao's face torn in two.
"Rip—rip—"
Still not satisfied, Zhao Tiemei tore the photo a few more times, ripping it into pieces before scattering them into the air.
Paper scraps fluttered down.
It landed on the ground, on Cheng Zheng's shoulder, and at his feet.
"Here you go."
Zhao Tiemei clapped her hands, a provocative smile on her face.
Cheng Zheng's gaze pierced through the fragments and landed on Zhao Tiemei's face. Her eyes were bloodshot, with red at the corners, as if something was burning inside.
The veins on his forehead suddenly bulged, and his fingers, hanging at his sides, clenched tightly, making his knuckles crack.
The next second, he moved.
His tall, imposing figure instantly closed in on Zhao Tiemei, bringing with him an overwhelming sense of pressure. His clenched fist suddenly shot up—
Zhao Tiemei shuddered, backing away as her legs trembled, her voice sharp and distorted: "You, you... what do you want to do? You can't hit a woman!"
She had witnessed his prowess in one-on-one combat; he had once single-handedly taken down sixteen of his teammates in the army. If she were to be hit by one of his punches, her skull would probably crack!
Zhao Tiemei was terrified!
"Comrade!" Just then, a hurried voice came from the doorway.
Xiao Liu from the factory office, carrying a folder, strode in. Startled by the scene before him, he quickly said, "Director Zhou asked me to inform you that there's a meeting in the administration building. Go now!"
Cheng Zheng's hand froze in mid-air. He stared intently at Zhao Tiemei for two seconds, his blood-red eyes seeming to churn with magma, yet they were suppressed by a thin layer of ice.
In the end, the fist did not fall.
He slowly withdrew his hand, loosening his knuckles one by one, then turned and walked out.
Assistant Zheng glared at Zhao Tiemei and followed her.
Seeing the person leave, Zhao Tiemei's legs went weak, and she knelt down on the ground, terrified.
I was terrified.
She gasped for breath, her back soaked with cold sweat, clinging to her body and chilling her to the bone.
