Chapter 2 Who Dares to Touch My Mother
Chapter 2 Who Dares to Touch My Mother
"Who dares to touch my mother?"
A furious male voice rang out, and then a boy appeared before them. His whole body was tense, his hand gripping a wood-chopping knife tightly, his fingertips turning white from the force. His sun-tanned, wheat-colored cheeks were slightly red with rage, and his eyes were fixed on the man and woman.
"Big brother," Daya called out from behind, her voice trembling.
Upon hearing Da Ya's words, Song Jiaojiao thought, "It seems that this is my cheap eldest son who ruined Wang Hefan."
Seeing the young man holding a wood-chopping knife, the man dared not approach easily. The two were locked in a stalemate due to Wang Hefan's arrival, neither daring to make a move, until:
"Grandpa Village Chief, hurry up! My mother and sister are still inside being bullied by bad guys!" Er Ya's childish, anxious voice came through the phone.
"Don't worry, Er Ya, Grandpa Village Chief won't let bad guys run rampant in our Qingshui Village."
A middle-aged man's voice came over, making a very serious promise to Er Ya.
Hearing this, I finally breathed a sigh of relief; at least the two girls wouldn't be taken away today. In an instant, Er Ya led a middle-aged man in his early forties into the courtyard. He had well-defined and upright features, exuding an aura of righteousness. His eyebrows slanted upwards towards his temples, and his eyes revealed a calm and composed demeanor.
"Wang, tell me what exactly happened?" the village chief asked sternly.
Upon hearing this, Song Jiaojiao knew that the village chief was not one to smooth things over. So she glanced at the two restless men and slowly said, "Village chief, when my daughters Daya and Erya were tidying up the courtyard at home, these two men tried to take my two girls away without saying a word, saying... saying that the Wang family's old house had taken five taels of silver from them and gave my daughters Daya and Erya to them as collateral."
Upon hearing this, the villagers who had come with the village chief were shocked! They began to whisper among themselves.
"That old woman Wang is truly heartless. She treats her own son's orphans like this, as if Daya and Erya weren't her granddaughters."
"Yes, yes, not to mention that this little Wang had only received the devastating news of her husband's death on the battlefield for less than a month before she kicked the mother and her four children out of the house and separated from them."
"That's right. When the family was divided, nothing was given to Xiao Wangshi. Not to mention the land and fields, she wasn't even left with a place to stay. If it weren't for the village chief taking pity on her and giving her an old house in the village, she wouldn't know where she would be now."
Upon hearing this, the village chief immediately looked at the couple and asked, "Is what Wang said true? Who gave you the audacity to come to our Qingshui Village and arbitrarily arrest people? Do you have any respect for the law?"
"Village Chief of Qingshui Village, you can't say that. We were invited by your village's old woman, Wang, who said she had a girl to sell. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known about this trip from so far away."
The woman with the mole argued, "Since that's the case, I dare not take these two girls. But your village has to return the money to me, otherwise I will have to ask the magistrate to make the decision."
Upon hearing that the matter was going to be taken to the authorities, the villagers clamored for the village chief to summon Old Lady Wang to return the money.
The village chief casually pointed to a villager named Wang Fugui standing next to him: "Go to the Wang family's old house and bring him here."
Wang Fugui, whose name was called, nodded and headed towards the Wang family's old house. At this moment, Li Chunhua, the eldest daughter-in-law of the Wang family, who was hiding behind and watching the commotion, realized something was wrong and hurriedly rushed home.
"Oh no! Oh no! Mother, something terrible has happened! We've been exposed!" Li Chunhua cried out, panting heavily.
"What are you shouting in such a panic? What's wrong?" Old Mrs. Wang said to Li Chunhua, her voice lacking confidence.
“Mother, it’s all because of that little slut Song Jiaojiao. Didn’t you sell those two good-for-nothing girls from Song Jiaojiao’s family to a slave trader? Who knew that Song Jiaojiao would change her usual timid nature and make such a big fuss? The village chief sent someone to call you.” As soon as Li Chunhua finished speaking, Wang Fugui’s voice called for help rang out.
"Aunt Wang, the village chief wants you to go to Song Jiaojiao's courtyard." Wang Fugui's strong voice came from outside the courtyard.
"It's Fugui! Did the village chief call me over for something?" Old Mrs. Wang slowly walked to the courtyard gate and asked Wang Fugui, pretending not to understand.
Wang Fugui pursed his lips: "You'll know when your aunt goes. Hurry up, the village chief is waiting for you."
Wang Fugui urged hurriedly.
"Alright, alright. I know, you go first, I'll be there soon." Old Mrs. Wang waved her hand impatiently.
Wang Fugui gave a soft "hmm" and turned to leave.
“Mother, are we really going? That slave trader is forcing the village to hand over money, or he’ll report us to the authorities!” Li Chunhua stared intently at her mother-in-law, as if asking her to hand over money was like cutting off a piece of her own flesh, forgetting that the money didn’t belong to them in the first place.
Old Mrs. Wang sighed and said, "We'll only know when we get there. Let's go!"
Half a pillar had passed before Old Lady Wang slowly appeared in everyone's sight. Her unhurried attitude made the villagers suspect that the slave trader was lying.
"You're finally here! If you hadn't come soon, I would have suspected you didn't want to pay me back. Hurry up, I can't take your girl with me. Give me back the five taels of silver, or it'll be dark by now," the woman with the mole said impatiently.
"You woman, all you talk about is money! When have I ever taken any money from you? You're too arrogant, coming all the way to Qingshui Village to extort money!" Old Mrs. Wang shouted, her face saying, "I didn't take any money from you, don't try to slander me."
The woman with the mole scoffed and said, "I knew you old hag wouldn't keep your word. Luckily, I had a backup plan. Look what this is."
The woman with the mole took out a contract. "It's written in black and white that your Wang family sold two maids from your youngest branch to me for five taels of silver. Look carefully, it clearly states whether Wang Dashan is your eldest son. It has a signature and fingerprint. You can't just renege on this."
"Who knows if you let that person sign and put their fingerprint on it? How can you prove that it was my eldest son who signed it?" Old Mrs. Wang retorted softly, her voice lacking confidence.
“If you don’t believe me, we’ll go confront the officials. Then we’ll bring your eldest son here for comparison, and everything will be clear,” the woman with the mole said calmly.
"No, you can't arrest my Dashan!" a sharp voice rang out as Li Chunhua shouted. "Mother, give her the money. Dashan can't be arrested; he'll get a beating if he sees an official."
Hearing this, the truth finally came to light.
"The Wang family is too ruthless. The whole family ganged up on the youngest branch of the Wang family. Even after they've separated their households, they still won't let Song Jiaojiao and her child go. They're really trying to take advantage of someone who has no descendants," said Aunt Sun, the most gossipy woman in the village.
"That's right, that's right, we can't let someone like the village chief get away with this," the villagers chimed in.
"Old Wang, hurry up and return the money to them, or our village might not tolerate your family anymore," the village chief said firmly.
