Chapter 22: The Inexperienced Little Liu
Chapter 22: The Inexperienced Little Liu
When Jiang Yu and his group stepped into the Qin Palace Scenic Area in Hengdian, there was a moment of subtle pause.
The personal welcome from director Rob Minkoff, and the presence of two prominent Chinese and foreign film producers, Rafira and Wang Zhonglei, made the crew realize that the visitor was no ordinary person.
When they saw that the person surrounded in the center was an excessively young Chinese face, curiosity and speculation exploded silently like water droplets thrown into a hot oil pan.
"Jiang! Welcome!" Director Minkoff's voice boomed as he shook Jiang Yu's hand vigorously. "It's wonderful that you could come in person! This shows how much you value this project!"
His enthusiasm was partly polite and partly genuine.
After all, the special effects company controlled by this young man is not only related to the success or failure of the final visual effects of "The Forbidden Kingdom", but also closely related to his recent rise to fame in Hollywood.
Jiang Yu responded with a smile, but her gaze inadvertently drifted past the director's shoulder and landed on the temporary rest area for the lead actors.
The first thing that catches the eye is Jackie Chan and Jet Li.
Two iconic figures of Chinese kung fu, now stripped of their on-screen glamour and dressed in slightly worn costumes, are gathered with martial arts instructors, demonstrating a famous and complex set of fighting moves.
Then, he saw Li Bingbing a little further away.
Finally, his gaze settled on the inconspicuous folding chair in the corner.
Liu Yifei.
She was wearing a somewhat tattered, coarse cloth costume, a stark contrast to her usual ethereal, otherworldly image.
She lowered her head slightly, holding an open script in her hands.
This is the second time I've seen her in two lifetimes, since our blind date in my previous life.
At this moment, they did not know each other.
A strange, indescribable feeling welled up in Jiang Yu's heart.
The mature woman in my memory, who calmly discussed industry changes and life choices with him in 2026, with a clear-headedness and a touch of weariness after weathering storms, forms a stark contrast with the naive figure of this young man who has just turned twenty.
The polite yet distant meeting arranged by his parents in his past life, and the fleeting glance he now exchanged across the crowd on set, seem like two parallel lines that will never intersect. Yet, because of the wings of this butterfly he was reborn with, they resonate faintly at this moment.
.......
At this moment, Jackie Chan and Jet Li over there seemed to have finished their discussion about the action sequences and noticed the commotion.
The two exchanged a glance and walked over together.
"Director Minkoff, Raffira, Mr. Wang, are we having distinguished guests?"
Jackie Chan spoke first, his face beaming with a smile. His signature big nose and approachable expression instantly broke the slightly formal atmosphere.
His gaze fell on Jiang Yu, scrutinizing him with goodwill.
"Jackie, Jet, come here, let me introduce you!"
Raffira immediately chimed in, her tone laced with obvious boasting, "This is Mr. Jiang Yu, the founder of Light Chaser Pictures and Light & Shadow Digital! The recent Hollywood sensation, *Taken*, was organized and its core visual effects were handled by their company! They're currently collaborating with Summit Entertainment and Fox on *Twilight* and *Avatar*! They're also a strategic partner of Lionsgate!"
A hint of surprise and understanding flashed in both Jackie Chan's and Jet Li's eyes. As international superstars, they were naturally well-informed.
The shockwaves caused by "Taken" as a dark horse action film that achieved great success with a small budget were already known to Hollywood, and they also knew that a new company was behind it.
I never expected that the founder would be so young and Chinese.
"Oh, Mr. Jiang! It's an honor to meet you!" Jackie Chan immediately extended his hand warmly. "I've seen 'Taken'! The action was fantastic, and the filming was incredibly realistic! Congratulations on the box office success!"
Jet Li smiled and extended his hand, saying succinctly, "Mr. Jiang, congratulations. The film is very solid."
"Brother, Brother Jie, you flatter me. You two are the pride of the Chinese people and role models for us to learn from." Jiang Yu's attitude was humble and his response was appropriate.
He knew that these two were taking the initiative to be friendly at this moment, partly out of politeness and recognition of his achievements; but more deeply, it was their desire to return to the mainstream Hollywood market.
"The Forbidden Kingdom" is their highly anticipated comeback film, and Jiang Yu, an insider who suddenly made a name for himself in Hollywood, is undoubtedly someone worth befriending, and who may even bring opportunities.
"Mr. Jiang's company is really impressive," Cheng Long said casually. "If there are any action film projects suitable for old guys like us in the future, don't forget to consider them! We're in Hollywood now, and finding a reliable male lead script isn't easy!"
This was half a joke and half a sincere remark, and Jet Li nodded slightly in agreement.
"You two are too modest. We'll definitely cooperate if we have the chance," Jiang Yu replied with a smile, not making any definitive statements.
The lively greetings among the superstars on one side naturally attracted attention on the other.
Li Binbin and his daughter Liu Yifei also came over.
"Hello, Mr. Jiang, I'm Li Binbin." Li Binbin greeted him with a graceful and gentle smile.
"Hello, Ms. Li." Jiang Yu nodded in greeting.
Liu Xiaoli then led Liu Yifei forward, a polite social smile on her face: "Mr. Jiang, it's an honor to meet you. I am Liu Xiaoli, and this is my daughter, Liu Yifei. Yifei, this is Jiang Yu, Mr. Jiang of Chasing Light Pictures."
Liu Yifei raised her head and looked at Jiang Yu again. This time, there was less doubt in her eyes and more polite distance and courtesy.
She nodded slightly, her voice clear but not loud, with the standard tone of an actor speaking to a stranger in the industry: "Hello, Mr. Jiang."
"Ms. Liu, Ms. Liu Yifei, hello." Jiang Yu's gaze swept calmly over the mother and daughter, not lingering on Liu Yifei's face. His attitude was standard business politeness, maintaining an appropriate distance.
Raffira then took the opportunity to briefly boast about Jiang Yu and the great achievements of Light and Shadow Digital, her tone full of pride.
Liu Xiaoli's eyes lit up as she listened, and her gaze toward Jiang Yu became even more fervent.
Liu Yifei listened quietly, occasionally glancing at Jiang Yu with a calm and unwavering gaze, as if she were listening to a legendary story that had nothing to do with her.
The Hollywood drama, capital battles, and technological pinnacle seemed very distant to her, a young actress in Hengdian filming, wearing tattered costumes and pondering the next action scene.
After a brief greeting, Director Minkoff got to the point: "Mr. Jiang, Director Wu, why don't we take a look at the set setup first? There are a few green screens and special camera positions that we'd like to hear your professional opinions on."
"Okay, director." Jiang Yu readily agreed.
Wu Na and her team were already eager to get started, and upon hearing this, they immediately grabbed their equipment cases and followed.
Most of the time, Jiang Yu simply followed quietly by Wu Na's side, listening to her technical conversations with various parties, occasionally adding a word or two at crucial moments.
However, a portion of his attention, as if possessed by its own will, always drifted toward that corner of the film set.
Liu Yifei had already sat back down in her folding chair and no longer seemed to be looking down at the script.
She turned slightly to the side, her gaze seemingly fixed on the extras rehearsing their positions not far away. Out of the corner of her eye, perhaps because the technical team and director were having a lively discussion, or perhaps just an unconscious glance, she would occasionally sweep over here.
She observed that the young CEO, Mr. Jiang, mostly listened; whenever he spoke, whether it was the director or the seemingly skilled technicians, they would immediately stop and listen attentively.
This is unlike many investors and producers she has met.
Those people are either aloof or boastful; few are as calmly immersed in the technical details as he is.
Her mother, Liu Xiaoli, whispered something in her ear, probably about how powerful this CEO Jiang was.
Liu Yifei listened somewhat absentmindedly, more concerned about whether her blocking was correct, whether her lines and emotions were accurate, and whether the wires would hurt her again.
"Yifei, it's your scene next, get ready!" The assistant director's shout interrupted her thoughts and also Liu Xiaoli's whispers.
