Chapter 24 Packing things
Chapter 24 Packing things
Su Dabao and Su Erbao, their hands trembling, led the mule, watching Su Yue disappear again at the town gate.
Su Dabao noticed in the past few days that Su Yue was different from before, and it was possible that she was possessed by an evil spirit, just as his parents had said.
He initially thought so too, but over the past few days he discovered that this ghost, besides always hitting people at the beginning, not only loved to study later on, but also always managed to bring back meat to eat during this lean season.
"Let's go," Su Dabao said to Su Erbao, and quickly drove the mule cart home.
They no longer cared what Su Yue was going to do when she returned to town.
Once inside the town, Su Yue planned to go to the county government office to inquire about information.
So they climbed over the wall that led them to the county government office and made their way to the backyard.
Seeing that the others were still busy, Su Yue found a corner to hide and watch.
Soon Magistrate Zhu arrived, got into the largest carriage, and left through the back gate of the county government office.
Several horse-drawn carriages and more than a dozen carts loaded with goods followed behind.
Taking advantage of the moment when no one was paying attention, Su Yue knocked out a maid who was about the same height as her, dragged her to a corner, changed her clothes, covered her face, climbed onto the last cart, and followed Magistrate Zhu out of Ping'an Town.
When Su Yue first sat on the cart, she didn't dare to move around. Only her two big, dark eyes darted around.
After walking for a while, Su Yue finally looked up and examined the person carrying the cart in front of her. He looked like someone who was skilled in martial arts.
The women sitting on the last cart are all old women who serve others; Su Yue is the youngest of them.
The carriage ahead galloped for two hours, finally stopping just before dark.
Su Yue looked up and saw that it was the wife, young lady, and young master of Magistrate Zhu's family who needed to use the restroom.
If we don't act now, when will we?
Taking advantage of the fact that everyone was out relieving themselves and there were fewer people on the cargo carts, Su Yue slowly made her way over.
First, she used her mental power to store the contents of the box into her spatial storage. Then, whenever she passed a cart, the grain in the cloth bag was silently taken away and replaced with stones collected from the town.
They really didn't leave Magistrate Zhu any of it.
After doing all this, Su Yue pretended to go to the toilet and found a secluded place to enter the space.
Seeing that those people hadn't noticed anything and continued driving away, Su Yue finally left the space.
They rode the horse they had initially acquired from the Qian family towards Ping'an Town.
I don't know if it will be in time.
Despite the discomfort of riding a horse, Su Yue hurried towards Ping'an Town.
As Su Dabao and Su Erbao drove their mule cart back to the village, they were stopped by the village aunties and grandmas as soon as they entered the village entrance.
"Hey! Isn't this the scholar from the Su family? Hehe! Aren't scholars supposed to be refined? You look so flustered, you must have done something bad and someone's scolding you!" an auntie teased.
"That's right, we don't even know when the Su family bought the mule. They didn't even tell anyone. Are they afraid the villagers will take advantage of you? Sigh! And they're still studying? I think they've wasted their time." Another old woman reached out and tried to grab Su Dabao.
Su Dabao was already anxious because he had something on his mind, and he usually didn't like to talk to these gossipy aunties and grandmas, so he drove the mule away.
Unexpectedly, the old lady got upset when Su Dabao ignored her and insisted on arguing with him.
Su Dabao pushed the old woman aside and drove the mule cart home.
The old woman who was pushed was unhappy and led a group of people from the village entrance to the Su family to demand an explanation.
When they passed the village chief's house, they handed the mule cart to Su Erbao and went to find the village chief to tell him about their plan to flee the famine.
He originally wanted Su Erbao to speak, but he was afraid that the village chief would think that Su Erbao was too young to talk nonsense, so he spoke up himself.
Following behind was an aunt who wanted to go to the Su family to demand an explanation. When she saw that Su Dabao had gone to the village chief's house, she was afraid that Su Dabao would complain first, so she also ran to the village chief's house.
Village Chief Su was resting under a big tree in the courtyard when he saw Su Dabao come in, so he got up to greet him.
As long as someone in the village is educated, he will give them some respect. Besides, out of the twenty-odd households in the village, only two or three children can afford to go to school.
"Da Bao! Why aren't you at home studying? What brings you here?" Village Chief Su said, pulling Su Da Bao inside to sit down.
"Village Chief, let's not go inside. Let's talk outside. I'm waiting to go back and help my parents pack their things."
"Da Bao, packing your things now, where are you going? Is the town school open yet?" Village Chief Su thought he was going to school, but what Su Da Bao said next almost made him faint.
"Village Chief, I just came back from town. The Huns are about to attack. I came to tell you to hurry up and have the villagers pack their things and escape! If you wait any longer, it might be too late." Su Dabao finished speaking quickly and was about to leave.
"Wait a minute, what did you say? That the Huns are going to attack? Who told you that? Don't be fooled." Village Chief Su was still somewhat skeptical.
Although their place was close to the Xiongnu, it was still separated by two mountains and a river.
What Village Chief Su didn't know was that the river had long since dried up due to drought.
“Village chief, if you don’t believe me, go to town and see for yourself how many refugees there are on the road. Anyway, our family is going to leave.”
"Da Bao! Tell me, are you really going to run away? Can we go up the mountain? You're a scholar, you must know what to do!" Village Chief Su seemed to be grabbing at something, pulling on Su Da Bao and trying to stop him from leaving.
"Village Chief, don't pull me! I'm telling you, going up the mountain is no good. You've heard how brutal the Xiongnu are. We should pack our things and escape before we have time. Are we going to stay and wait for the Xiongnu to kill us? Village Chief!" Su Dabao was anxious and pried open Village Chief Su's hand to leave.
Those who had just wanted to argue with Su Dabao had all overheard what was happening at the door, and they all looked at Village Chief Su with blank and bewildered expressions.
An aunt was about to say something when Village Chief Su interrupted her, "You all heard what the eldest son of the Su family said. Hurry up and pack your things and run away!"
"Village chief, if you really believe that kid, what if he's lying? Then we'll have escaped for nothing." An aunt said, somewhat skeptical.
Village Chief Su was too lazy to argue with these people. His legs were trembling, but he still believed what Su Dabao said.
"If you believe me, go back and pack your things and we'll meet at the village entrance in a bit. If you don't believe me, then it's up to you. Everyone, go ahead and leave. My family needs to pack our things too." Village Chief Su directly instructed his eldest son to start ushering people out.
Then he turned around and asked his wife to pack their belongings and food for the journey.
He then took the gong, had his grandson help him, and walked around the village banging it and shouting.
Soon the village descended into chaos, filled with the cries of children and women...
When Su Yue arrived in town at top speed, she was just in time for closing time.
In the end, they were extorted for two taels of silver before they were allowed in.
Su Yue didn't have time to deal with the two people who had extorted two taels of silver from her.
