Chapter 28 The Little Wolf is Hungry
Chapter 28 The Little Wolf is Hungry
Wen Zijin took two sips, nodded in agreement, and picked up her chopsticks to eat slowly and deliberately.
Yan Che wasn't as particular as him; he picked up his chopsticks and devoured the food in a flash.
"Brother Zijin, this scrambled egg is so delicious!" After saying that, he picked up the wooden bowl, poured out most of the soup to mix with rice, and then put a piece of shredded pork and bean sprouts into his mouth. Before he could swallow it, he immediately took a bite of cold shredded vegetables.
Wen Zijin's favorite soup is yam, mung bean, and pork rib soup. The mung beans in the soup are sandy and the yam inside is smooth and creamy. The pork ribs are tender and fall off the bone. Dipping them in the bright red sauce makes it even more appetizing.
Before the two had even finished eating half of their meal, a person carrying a bowl walked towards them.
"Zijin and Yanche, what are you eating? I can smell the delicious aroma from afar," Su Xian asked with a smile as she walked to the table.
"Master Su!" the two exclaimed in unison, quickly putting down their chopsticks and preparing to bow.
"Hey! There's no need to be so formal outside of class," he said kindly, pressing the two of them down to sit.
Wen Zijin noticed that the bowl he was holding contained only some pickled vegetables, so she stood up, helped him sit down, and said, "My family made some food and brought it over. It tastes quite good. I hope you won't mind and will eat with us."
"I don't mind at all," Su Xian said with a smile.
That's exactly what he was waiting for! Yesterday, he only said that his wife's cooking was too greasy, and she got angry and didn't cook for him today.
Left with no other choice, he brought some pickled vegetables from home to make do.
Unexpectedly, he smelled a delicious aroma as soon as he arrived at the cafeteria. Following the aroma, he saw his two students.
But he was too shy to speak up, and besides, it wouldn't be proper etiquette.
Now that he'd received the invitation, he was secretly delighted.
He picked up his chopsticks without any hesitation, and the first thing he picked up was the cold shredded vegetables. After eating it, his eyes lit up and he reached for the other two bowls with his chopsticks.
He didn't stop eating once he started. Wen Zijin and the other woman exchanged a glance, both of them smiling at each other's eyes, seeing how much he loved to eat.
Both of them adored this teacher; he was erudite yet free from the decadence of scholars, and treated his students like his own children.
The two of them deboned the ribs, dipped them in water, and put them in his bowl.
Seeing that he was eating with relish, Wen Zijin placed the remaining bamboo tube of plum juice in front of him. "Master, have some water to soothe your throat."
Su Xian smiled and took a sip. He originally thought it was just ordinary water, but he didn't expect it to be sour and sweet, quenching his thirst and tasted delicious.
He drank several more mouthfuls and finished the rice in his bowl before putting down his chopsticks.
"I'm so lucky to have such delicious food today, all thanks to you two!"
"Wonderful! Wonderful!"
Su Xian doesn't have many hobbies, except for enjoying delicious food.
Not to mention since the beginning of summer, he had never eaten this much before.
"If you feel it's too hot and you have no appetite, you can eat with me. But please don't find this simple meal unappetizing."
Su Xian's eyes lit up, and he smiled in agreement. Although he was their teacher, he felt it wasn't quite right, so he said, "I just happened to come today, and shamelessly."
"From now on, Zijin should tell me how much silver it should cost. There's no such thing as getting something for nothing!"
Wen Zijin shook her head and said, "Our teacher is usually very kind to us, but to fuss over something as trivial as a meal is surely disheartening."
Su Xian stroked his goatee and nodded in agreement, thinking that at worst he would come home later and teach them a couple more problems.
……
Wen Luozhi and Xie He went on another shopping spree. When they arrived at Li Da's butcher shop, he had already prepared the pig offal, presumably having been waiting for them.
Upon seeing Wen Luozhi and her daughter, he greeted them warmly, "Big sister, little girl! Which piece do you want today? I'll give you a discount if you choose carefully."
Instead of rushing to buy meat, Wen Luozhi asked Su Erniang, "Boss, how is the pretty auntie?"
The shopkeeper laughed heartily and said, "Thanks to the little snacks you brought! My wife ate some yesterday and her appetite improved a lot; she even ate two bowls of rice last night!"
"This morning she woke up wanting those little snacks, but I searched all the shops and couldn't find any that sold them!"
"I'll have to trouble you to sell me some more, sister!" He looked at Xie He somewhat embarrassedly.
Xie He was a little confused. She looked at Wen Luozhi with a puzzled expression, only to see Wen Luozhi blinking at her.
Xie He immediately understood and laughed at Li, saying, "What do you mean by selling? It's just a little something we made ourselves, it's not worth much."
"My sister loves this, I'll bring her some from town tomorrow, it's no big deal!"
The boss thanked them with a smile, and when he cut their flesh, he chose the best cuts for them. When they paid, he rounded down the price and even gave them a free serving of offal.
Wen Luozhi wasn't going to take it for nothing. She rummaged through her sleeve and pulled out a bag of soda crackers and small nuts, handing it over. "Boss, these little biscuits can relieve your morning sickness, and these dried fruits will surely make your baby incredibly smart."
This time, Li Da didn't stand on ceremony. After thanking him, he took the gift with both hands and carefully held it in his arms as if he were holding a precious treasure.
After watching the mother and son walk away, he rushed into the house again, just like yesterday, carrying his things and looking for Su Erniang.
After returning to the village, as soon as Wen Luozhi stepped across the threshold, the little wolf's round body rushed towards her, with Daya, Erya, and Xiaohu following closely behind.
“Auntie! Little dog… dog in your room…” Little Tiger didn’t know how to express himself, so he pointed to Wen Luozhi’s room and then to Little Wolf.
Wen Luozhi picked him up and said with a smile, "Are you trying to say that the puppy ran out of my house?"
When Little Tiger heard that she understood what he meant, he grinned and nodded heavily.
Er Ya squatted down and touched the wolf cub's belly. "Auntie, it seems hungry."
The little wolf howled a few times in cooperation, its whimpering sounding quite aggrieved.
Daya thought for a moment and said, "It's so small, it should still be drinking milk, right?"
The little wolf howled a few more times, as if agreeing with her statement.
Wen Luozhi also thought so, because small animals need goat milk to digest it, but which family has a female goat?
Wen Luozhi frowned, looking somewhat troubled.
"Little sister, what's wrong? Did something happen in town?" Li Chunxing came out of the house after hearing the children talking and asked Wen Luozhi with a frown.
Wen Luozhi shook her head and replied, "It's nothing. Sister-in-law, do you know anyone who has a ewe? What if it's hungry and has no milk?" As she spoke, she pointed to the whimpering wolf cub on the ground.
Li Chunxing laughed and said, "Little sister, is it because of this? The village chief's family has ewes! They just gave birth last month, so they definitely have milk."
Hearing her say that, Wen Luozhi picked up some snacks she had bought today, thought for a moment, cut off a piece of meat and a large empty bowl, and went out.
Just as she stepped out, she ran into Xie He, who had already put her things away. After explaining the situation to her, the mother and daughter went to the village chief's house together.
