Chapter 597 - 596: Each Gets What They Need
Chapter 597 - 596: Each Gets What They Need
Si Shuo had never imagined her men were this formidable. She was even more excited than they were, jogging over to greet them, unsure of who to pounce on first.
Xiao Cheng grinned and stepped forward, only to be jostled aside by his Couple Brothers and forced to the back of the line.
Gong You was especially frustrated, gritting his teeth as he complained to Si Shuo, "Kiddo, this fox has no honor! We were all trying for a good rank, but he shouldn’t have gone for such a flashy top-three finish, right?"
"He hogged all the glory! If I hadn’t been holding back, I could have taken first place myself. Just as you’d expect from a fox—so full of schemes."
Si Shuo smiled and hugged his waist. "Don’t be angry, Gong You. You’re the ones who taught him, aren’t you? There’s no saying a master should starve just because he taught his apprentice everything he knows."
"If he wants to be the target, then let him. His actions will come back to bite him eventually. He’s in for a lot of trouble."
"Being number one isn’t easy. Just look at me. Once people found out I could transfer Beast Marks, it’s been one problem after another..."
Xiao Cheng’s expression cracked. He said pitifully, "Sister, why do I feel like I was just picked up off the street?"
"You weren’t picked up, you shamelessly latched onto us," Yin Jiang sneered.
Generally, at the same cultivation level, Flying Beasts are not as powerful as land beasts. But Yin Jiang had a Fire Ability and, as a Hunting Falcon, possessed incredible speed and keen senses, making him every bit as powerful in combat as a land beast.
That made him one of the family’s trump cards. Otherwise, Xiao Cheng would have all the glory to himself!
Zhi Le and the others also gritted their teeth. ’This guy really knows how to curry favor.’
Xiao Cheng ducked his head. "You say that as if you all aren’t just as eager." His words made the others clench their fists.
Si Shuo, however, started looking at the Identity Card imprints on their foreheads. A Beast Mark identified a Beastman’s Level, ranked according to the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and violet. The Identity Card imprints followed the same system. The totems of the five Beast Countries were different, but the color-coding was universal.
A temporary Identity Card imprint was white, while a standard, official one was red. Regardless of which Beast City’s Late Autumn competition a Beastman entered, anyone who placed in the top one hundred would receive an orange totem. The top fifty received yellow, the top thirty green, the top twenty cyan, the top ten blue, and the top three received violet!
Guanping Country’s totem was a crashing wave pattern. It had to be said, her men were already handsome, resolute, or refined in their own ways, and the exquisite, brightly colored totems on their foreheads only enhanced their looks, lending them an air of sacred inviolability.
The cubs watched with envy and admiration. The young males, in particular, secretly vowed that they too would one day wear a violet totem to win glory for their future mates.
They had only taken a few steps when several groups of people approached them all at once.
"Greetings, Si Shuo Divine Servant. We are the Ling Family from the White Fox Clan of Pingjing. We sincerely invite you to become Counselors for our clan..."
"...I am the City Lord of Yuan’an Beast City... Si Shuo Divine Servant, would you be willing to become one of our Ten Elders?"
"...We are from the Rong Prince Mansion..."
Each of them was desperate to prove their sincerity, hoping to recruit Si Shuo and her powerful Beast Husbands to their side. This one family was surely worth more than an elite squad of a hundred men!
They even promised a wealth of benefits, offering everything from private manors, shops, and farmland to Beast Slaves, Crystal Stones, and even shares in mineral deposits.
Each offer was incredibly tempting. If her family weren’t already wealthy, worldly, and resolute, they might have actually been persuaded to accept.
Ji Liang and Xiao Cheng skillfully blocked the crowd, smiling as they said, "We have already accepted an invitation from the Princess. Our female has become a Counselor at the Princess Mansion, so if you require any assistance, you may inquire with the Princess."
As expected, the moment they mentioned the Princess’s name, the crowd was crestfallen, cursing themselves for their earlier hesitation. They were filled with regret. Before the Late Autumn competition, they had known the men with Si Shuo were strong, but they never expected them to be *this* strong!
With no other choice, they could only offer a few sheepish pleasantries before hurriedly departing.
The Princess stood waiting outside, a wide smile on her face. She was extremely satisfied with Si Shuo and her group’s performance. "Excellent, excellent. I never expected the Beast Husbands accompanying Si Shuo Divine Servant to be so formidable."
"Once you follow me to Pingjing, I will certainly make sure every one of you is well taken care of!"
Si Shuo smiled and nodded. "Then we thank you in advance, Princess."
The Princess’s face was alight with joy; she hadn’t expected to reap such a great reward just by coming to see the excitement. With a Divine Servant’s help, her life in the Capital City would surely be much smoother. Her only regret was that the coldest season was almost upon them, preventing her from taking Si Shuo’s family south immediately. Her voice grew even gentler. "No need for such formalities. From now on, we’re all in the same boat. I see you’re quite young, Si Shuo Divine Servant, so I’ll be bold and consider myself your older sister."
"From now on, you can call me Sister Xue, and I’ll call you Shuo. How does that sound?"
The moment she finished speaking, she felt a tangible wave of oppressive energy from one of the men.
The Princess almost buckled at the knees and coughed up blood. Her gaze snapped sharply in that direction, only to see Wei Ce looking completely indifferent, not even sparing her a glance.
She suppressed the jealousy and humiliation bubbling inside her and forced a smile. "Is there a problem, Si Shuo Divine Servant?"
Si Shuo chuckled. "Princess, I believe our relationship is one of cooperation. I need your title and protection, and you need my occasional assistance. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement, so let’s be direct with each other. There’s no need to force a closer connection."
A flicker of displeasure crossed the Princess’s brow, but it vanished in an instant. "Very well. I appreciate your straightforward nature, Si Shuo Divine Servant. As it happens, I’m not fond of excessive courtesy and hypocrisy either."
"I will be leaving Ningbei City for Pingjing after this Late Autumn competition. I hope that you, Si Shuo Divine Servant, will set off as soon as possible after the winter ends."
Si Shuo nodded and led her family away with a smile.
Pingjing was the capital of the Guanping Beast Country, a place everyone was dying to get into. But the more prosperous a Beast City, the stricter the entry requirements for beastmen. Becoming the Princess’s Counselors was their most efficient method.
They were confident that in Pingjing Country, they would encounter more of the villains who used Horned Deer Beastmen to prolong their lives!
Not only was the Princess returning to Pingjing, but so was Young Master Xu Feng.
On the way back, the men discussed in low voices, "Before they leave, they’ll definitely hold another banquet or two. They’ll invite the beastmen who ranked well in the competition to try and recruit some High-level Warriors..."
"If we’re going to make our move, it would be best to do it before he leaves Ningbei City... The city is crowded with all sorts of beastmen right now. Even if something happened to him, no one would suspect us..."
"In the story about Xu Feng and Yuan Ya, what was the main reason they got together?" Si Shuo asked out of the blue.
The men paused, stunned. It was true. Yuan Ya was a Female Saint in Beiping City, and her greatest claim to fame was her excellent fertility. Xu Feng had sought her out specifically because of that reputation.
’Does that mean we have to use that as our angle of attack?’ The men’s faces darkened as their thoughts all took a dirty turn.
