Chapter 274 Struggling to Survive 2
Chapter 274 Struggling to Survive 2
The sound of rain echoed through the jungle as Russell and Arya trudged through the muddy ground. Russell's wounds were gradually healing thanks to his extraordinary regenerative abilities, but his face remained pale and his breathing rapid. Arya supported him, her eyes filled with worry.
"We must find somewhere to take shelter from the rain..." Arya's voice was tinged with anxiety. The rain was pouring down, visibility was getting worse, and the paths through the jungle were becoming increasingly difficult to discern.
Finally, they discovered a cave. The entrance was hidden by dense vines, making it appear exceptionally secluded. Arya helped Russell into the cave, which was dark and damp, filled with a foul, fishy stench.
"Here..." Arya's voice held a hint of unease, "it seems like there's something..."
Just then, a low hissing sound came from the depths of the cave. A huge python slowly crawled out of the darkness, its body as thick as a tree trunk, its scales gleaming coldly in the dim light. The python's eyes, like two red lamps, stared intently at the intruder.
Arya screamed in terror, her body involuntarily stumbling backward and crashing into the cave wall. Russell swiftly raised the Fire Kirin Laser Gun, aiming the muzzle at the giant python.
"Back off!" Russell growled in a low voice.
The giant python's scales scraped against the rock wall with a metallic scraping sound, and Arya's back was already pressed against the damp cave wall. The mutated creature's spine bulged with an eerie glow, and its thirty-meter-long body almost filled the entire cave passage, crushing rotting animal skeletons into dust as it swam.
"boom!"
The hum of the Fire Kirin laser gun echoed shrilly through the cave, its crimson beam scorching a bowl-sized mark on the giant python's third scale. Dark purple blood splattered onto the rock wall, instantly corroding the stone into honeycomb-like holes. The python raised its triangular head, the size of a truck cab, its forked tongue grazing Russell's ear, carving a half-meter-deep furrow into the rock face.
Russell rolled away to dodge the sweeping snake tail, the golden force field of the entrenching tool tracing a lightning-fast path in the darkness. The moment the blade cut into the gaps in the scales, the entire python suddenly collapsed as if its joints had been ripped away, its slippery body coiling around his waist like a noose. His five ribs groaned in unbearable strain, and frothy clots of blood gushed from his mouth.
"Let him go!" Arya's scream carried a psychic shockwave, causing stalactites from the cave ceiling to rain down. The giant python's left eye suddenly exploded into a cloud of blood mist, but the pain only fueled its ferocity. It opened its massive jaws, large enough to swallow the front of a mech, its four barbed fangs dripping fluorescent green slime, and slammed down on Arya.
The suffocating feeling of impending death made Russell's vision go black, but he could clearly feel the pulse of the Bloodthirsty entrenching tool in his palm. When the snake's mouth was less than half a meter away from Arya, he channeled his last bit of psionic energy into the weapon, and the handle suddenly split into twelve golden spikes, which pierced through the giant python's upper jaw like blooming metal flowers.
The foul-smelling blood rained down on the two men, and Russell seized the opportunity to break free. He leaped up, stepping on the still convulsing snake's body, and with the entrenching tool's force field fully activated, he pinned the snake's head to a crack in the rock wall. The python's tail pounded the ground frantically, and the entire cave began to collapse, but Russell held firmly on the trembling shovel handle until the last muscle of the mutated creature stopped spasming.
Arya knelt in the pool of blood, watching Russell stagger towards them. His breastplate was completely deformed, and his bare chest was crisscrossed with deep, bone-revealing ligature marks, but these wounds were healing at a visible speed. As the first boulder struck their feet, Russell, having regained his mobility, dragged her out of the collapsing cave.
The jungle was thick with dampness after the rain. Russell leaned against a massive, ancient tree, its trunk covered in glowing moss. His armor was badly damaged, and the exposed skin still bore the slime of a giant python, gleaming eerily in the dim light. Hunger churned in his stomach like a dull knife, and he could feel his healing abilities consuming the last of his energy reserves.
“I need to eat something,” Russell said, his voice hoarse like sandpaper. His fingers dug unconsciously into the bark, leaving five deep grooves in the wood.
Arya nodded; her psychic vision was exceptionally clear in the dim rainforest. She noticed an underground river in the distance, its surface shimmering with phosphorescence, and occasionally a silvery fish would dart past. "There are fish in the river, I'll go catch some."
Russell didn't have the strength to respond, only nodding slightly. His pupils dilated in the darkness, like two dim moons. After Arya left, he heard his heartbeat slowing down, a sign that his body was entering an energy-saving state.
A pale blue aura emanated from Arya's hands by the river, and psionic threads, like spiderwebs, disappeared into the water. Startled, the mutated fish shimmered with a blinding silver light from their scales. She precisely manipulated her psionic energy, dragging the three largest fish to the surface. These fish, with their sharp bony spikes and glowing gills, were clearly not ordinary species.
“I hope you can digest this.” Arya tossed the still-struggling fish in front of Russell. The slime spurting from its gills corroded small pits in the ground, emitting a pungent, acidic smell.
Without hesitation, Russell grabbed a fish and bit through its spine. The mutated fish's blood, a fluorescent green, dripped down his chin, burning tiny dents into its breastplate. His teeth easily crushed the fish bones, swallowing them along with the scales. A second fish's bony protrusion grazed his lip, but he seemed oblivious to the pain.
"Does it need to be cooked?" Arya frowned at the barbaric scene.
Russell shook his head, swallowing the last bite of fish: "Energy... direct absorption is faster." His pupils began to contract, and the blood vessels beneath his skin glowed faintly with gold. He stuffed the third fish entirely into his mouth, leaving not even the tail.
Arya watched Russell's transformation with a chilling sense of unease. The fluorescent green fish blood seemed to be purified within him by some force; his damaged skin healed at a visible speed, and even the corrosion marks on his breastplate were fading. His breathing became steady and powerful, and his muscles bulged again, like a beast awakening.
“We have to move on.” Russell stood up and stretched. His voice, once again deep and resonant, was strong. “Something’s not right in this jungle. I can feel… something’s getting closer.”
Arya nodded; her psionic senses had also detected the anomaly. The sound of falling trees echoed in the distance, and the ground began to tremble slightly. Russell gripped the Blooddrinker entrenching tool, its golden field standing out starkly in the darkness.
“Stay close to me,” he whispered, his gaze fixed intently on the direction from which the tremor was coming. Arya noticed that his pupils had turned completely gold, like two burning flames.
