Chapter 128 Shangwen's Arrangements
Chapter 128 Shangwen's Arrangements
"I supervise not only academic master's students but also professional master's students. Do you know the difference between the two?" Shang Wen asked.
"Well, academic master's programs are more focused on theoretical research, with the goal of publishing high-level papers, while professional master's programs are more focused on practical applications. If you have your own patent, you can graduate pretty much, that's about it?" Chen Che explained his understanding based on his own knowledge.
"Yes," Shang Wen nodded, "That's basically it. I'm also thinking about how to optimize, improve, and advance the training path for professional master's students."
"Currently, we are cooperating with companies outside the school, which can be considered a joint training program. The internships at these companies are still in the more traditional master-apprentice model."
"While it's feasible, I feel it's not close enough; it doesn't give me the sense that we can lead the research."
"Since some of our students are starting their own businesses, I'd also like to give it a try. I can oversee the mobile app development, and my graduate students will participate in the actual development process."
Chen Che's eyes lit up. This was great! With a professor from the School of Computer Science personally overseeing the process, the quality and reliability of the mobile application would definitely be greatly improved.
Chen Che nodded like a woodpecker, smiling as he agreed, "No problem, Master. I think this direction is excellent and well worth trying."
Seeing him beaming like a flower, Shang Wen chuckled as well, but then gently shook his head: "Don't be too happy yet. There are two things I need to make clear to you beforehand."
Chen Che nodded: "Please speak, Master."
"Yes, since it's a student interning at a company, the subsidies should still be given. We can't save this money just because it's a student from our own school starting a business. This money isn't for me; you can just transfer it directly to his account," Shang Wen said frankly.
"No problem," Chen Che immediately nodded in agreement, "It's only right. Master, you've already said it, so I certainly wouldn't do something like taking advantage of someone else's labor."
Besides, giving a graduate student a stipend is much cheaper than hiring a full-time programmer, right?
Moreover, experienced programmers are seasoned veterans of the world; how could they possibly be at your beck and call? After all, graduate students have to graduate from under their professors. As long as it's not too excessive, they understand the principle of patience and forbearance.
"Hmm," Shang Wen thought, seeing how readily and efficiently Chen Che agreed, he gave Chen Che a fairly good basic evaluation in his mind. Some small business owners are just stingier the richer they are. If they have to be so stingy with even this small amount of money, then there is no point in them.
"There's one more thing, and although it might sound a bit harsh, I won't mince words with you," Shang Wen paused before continuing:
"If your project fails, I can't offer any assistance. I still have to fulfill my primary responsibility as a mentor: to ensure that my students learn something and graduate normally."
"No problem, I understand."
Chen Che, as always, nodded in agreement without hesitation.
After explaining these two points to him, the rest was up to Shang Wen and the graduate student.
Shang Wen thought for a moment, then made a phone call. A short while later, a first-year graduate student walked into the office. It was quite a large group; there were already two people in the office.
One of them was a graduate student I knew, but the other was a complete stranger. He looked very young. Was he going to have a surprise group meeting? I hadn't prepared anything yet.
While he was lost in thought, Shang Wen spoke up: "Song Zisheng, let me introduce you. This is your junior brother, Chen Che."
Upon hearing Shang Wen's words, Song Zisheng nodded subconsciously, only to realize that he was a student in this year's class, so where did this new junior come from?
"Uh, junior brother, which direction of Professor Shang's teaching did you choose?" Song Zisheng asked.
"Senior brother, I signed up for Master's Tai Chi elective course," Chen Che said earnestly.
"Huh?" Song Zisheng was completely bewildered. He knew that his advisor also taught the elective physical education course, but what did it mean that there was an elective student here now?
"Well, in a sense, he's also your boss," Shang Wen added.
"...?"
After Chen Che explained, I finally understood what was going on.
Originally, I was supposed to go to an outside company for production practice after finishing my theoretical courses, but now I don't need to go because the company is located on campus, and the computer lab is my internship location.
The subsidies that are due will still be received. Isn't this a win-win situation and the best thing ever?
Whether I can graduate or not is up to the teacher, and it's not mandatory to intern at outside companies.
It's quite a strange feeling to have a junior colleague, a few years younger than me, become my boss.
A feeling of envy and jealousy welled up inside me, but it quickly dissipated. I figured my personality was probably not suited to be a boss; I should just stick to working for a boss.
With that settled, Shang Wen continued, "Xiao Song, have you considered your own research direction?"
Speaking of this, Song Zisheng felt a little ashamed. After being admitted to graduate school, he went on a wild spree. Shang Wen had reminded him to think about his future direction, but he didn't take it seriously and planned to just coast through a semester of theoretical courses first.
"Master... this... I'm still considering it."
Seeing his embarrassed expression, Shang Wen understood what was going on, but didn't expose him. He said, "How about this, since you haven't thought it through yet, and you happen to have this opportunity to cooperate with your junior brother, you should focus on dynamic path planning and cost optimization."
"Do you understand what that means?" Shangwen asked.
Song Zisheng nodded and then shook his head: "I understand a little, but it doesn't seem like I understand completely."
Shang Wen sighed and gave a brief explanation. For example, there are three warehouses, a, b, and c, and goods need to be dispatched to two supply points, de and d. On the way to d, a new supply point, f, is added that also needs to be dispatched. Under various complex circumstances, how to maximize efficiency is Song Zisheng's research direction.
This also involves operations research.
Song Zisheng nodded thoughtfully: "Okay, teacher."
After Shang Wen finished explaining the situation and arranged everything related to the "French Fries" mobile app, the next step was for Song Zisheng and Cai Chong to coordinate their work.
After leaving the office, Song Zisheng followed behind Chen Che and said politely, "Junior, please guide me in the future."
"Oh," Chen Che slapped his forehead and said with a smile, "Senior Brother Song, there's something else I need your guidance on."
