Chapter 29 Campfire and Victims
Chapter 29 Campfire and Victims
As night fell, Lin Jue finally emerged from the deep pit and sat down with the others to rest beside the bus.
Sitting next to him, Takashi looked at him with a spicy snack in his hand and asked in confusion:
"So you dug all afternoon, and all you got were a few dead faces coming out of the wall? Nothing else?"
In the middle of the crowd, Lin Jue, expressionless, ate a spicy grilled sausage, shook his head, and said:
"I guess this paradoxical dimension is rather shy, so it didn't put up much real resistance, just gave it a token effort and that was it."
Hearing Lin Jue say it so casually, Gao Guizhi was even more puzzled, feeling like a fool.
This morning, Gao Guizhi described the "plane collapse" as incredibly frightening and dangerous.
After digging for a long time, almost nothing much happened; they only managed to dig out a few strange human faces from the rock wall.
What's so scary about this? It's not like we're in a haunted house. What's so frightening about a few dead faces?
That doesn't make sense. That old professor clearly said that the collapse of the paradoxical plane is extremely terrifying and could easily lead to the complete annihilation of all victims... Could that guy be a fraud?
Just as Gao Guizhi was wondering whether the old professor had fooled him and was teaching him false information.
He never dreamed that if those hundreds of "Three-Eyed Cursed Killers" that Lin Jue had flattened were released into the outside world, they would be enough to drive half the people of Baigang City crazy.
Unfortunately, they were unlucky enough to encounter Lin Jue, and as a result, they could only be turned into a bunch of QR codes.
The excavation work was largely undisturbed.
The excavation of the downhill section was much more efficient than people had imagined.
Lin Jue was digging a pit in front, while Duan Hong led a group of students to repair the road behind.
They used crude tools to cut down many camphor trees from the roadside.
Then, the trunks of these trees were made into simple planks and laid down the slope.
Since the concept of creating a "downhill road" is what everyone wants to build, then there must be a road.
Therefore, simply digging out a downhill passage is clearly not enough to complete the project; at least the planks must be laid out before it is finished.
Perhaps it was because the work was completed exceptionally smoothly, or perhaps because they felt very reassured by Lin Jue's abilities.
At this moment, the students of Class 2, Grade 12 were sitting around the bus. Although their eyes were tired, they still shone brightly.
They lit dry branches and weeds with a lighter to cook the little food they had, and chatted and laughed as they ate.
Of course, given the current extreme scarcity of food and water, each person can only get a bite or two, which is at most a craving.
For example, Jiang Fan, Bai Tingting, Gao Guizhi and others are holding only one or two spicy strips, and the water they are given is only the size of a bottle cap.
Lin Jue originally wanted to share the hardships with them, but everyone insisted on giving him the largest portion of food.
As she handed over the full bag of supplies, Bai Tingting stated with absolute certainty:
"Lin Jue, you're our only hero we can rely on, so you definitely need to conserve your energy. Otherwise, how will you lead us out of here?"
"That's right, that's right." Jiang Fan also advised, "It's okay if we go hungry for a few days and then eat outside. As long as we can get out of here, everything will be fine."
Under strong pressure from everyone, Lin Jue had no choice but to accept the small portion of food.
There wasn't much food: just a grilled sausage, a piece of bread, and a small bottle of mineral water.
Bai Tingting also carefully grilled the sausages and bread over charcoal, giving them an irresistible aroma.
When Lin Jue received these items, he was silent for a moment before nodding and saying:
"Okay... Don't worry, I will definitely get you out of here alive."
To be honest, before today, Lin Jue had not paid much attention to these high school classmates.
After all, this group of people often mocked him behind his back, and some girls even bullied him and touched his chest muscles.
But as so many people gazed at him with trusting eyes, Lin Jue couldn't help but think of his younger sister, Lin Qing.
From childhood to adulthood, Lin Qing often looked at him, her older brother, with that same gaze.
It was as if no matter what trouble happened, as long as her brother was still there, he could always resolve it perfectly.
It was in this atmosphere, filled with exhaustion and hunger, yet strangely warm.
As night deepened, Teacher Duan Hong waved his hand, sending all the students to rest.
According to the arrangement, the girls would sleep in a dilapidated bus, while the boys would sleep on the grass by the roadside.
Before going to bed, Duan Hong specifically arranged for several people, including himself, to take turns keeping watch at night.
If any unusual phenomenon occurs, the Night Watchman will immediately blow the whistle hanging around his neck to wake everyone up.
Of course, given Lin Jue's status and importance, he would never be assigned to keep watch at night.
Moreover, he was indeed too tired all day, and basically fell asleep as soon as he lay down on the lawn.
In his dream that day, Lin Jue dreamed of his younger sister whom he hadn't seen for several days, and of the underground city he had been longing for.
If it weren't for this mess of "reverse invasion," he was planning to launch an attack on those "Goblin Elite Watchtowers" today.
I don't know if I can defeat a level 6 goblin captain with my current strength... Oh well, I'll find out after I get out of here.
In this relaxed atmosphere, Lin Jue quickly fell into a deep sleep.
When he woke up the next morning, he was startled awake by a scream.
"Aaaaaaah!"
Early in the morning, the shouts coming from the back of the bus were like an invisible knife, cutting straight through the humid air.
The screams were filled with fear and panic, carrying an impact as if the world were ending.
In an instant, Lin Jue opened his eyes and leaped up from the ground, rushing towards the direction from which the sound came like lightning.
Whether it was a natural phenomenon or something else at work, swirling mist drifted around the roads early in the morning.
The slightly damp mist formed a white curtain that blocked out the sky.
It was placed over the barely visible "work of art" at the back of the bus.
When Lin Jue arrived there as quickly as possible.
He happened to see a girl lying on the ground, her face pale.
Her skirt, half-undone, hung on her knees, revealing cute bear-patterned underwear.
But Lin Jue ignored the awkward scene and stared intently at a pile of ashes not far away.
The pile of ashes was left behind when everyone lit a campfire here last night, and it was already a little damp from the morning mist.
However, in this pile of ashes, for some reason, there was a "person" lying there.
It was a charred, human-shaped body, as if pieced together from peeling, brittle shells.
The body, charred by the high temperature, remained curled up, looking as peaceful as if it were lying in its mother's arms.
Lin Jue walked a little closer, stunned, and then noticed a sweet, burnt smell permeating the air.
That wasn't the smell of burning wood or plastic; it was the sweet, rotten smell of human remains, unique to them, from fat that had melted at high temperatures and then cooled and solidified.
Realizing what he was smelling, Lin Jue frowned and subconsciously took a half step back.
At the same time, the sound of hurried footsteps came from the mist not far away.
The students, who had obviously been awakened by the scream, were also rushing over here.
To avoid disturbing people by seeing the charred remains.
Lin Jue quickly ran over and covered it completely with ashes.
Before long, a group of people, including Duan Hong, Bai Tingting, Jiang Fan, and Gao Guizhi, gathered around.
Everyone looked at Lin Jue, who was standing inexplicably in front of the pile of ashes, and the girl who was slumped on the ground, and seemed to be puzzled, wondering what had happened.
Just as everyone was looking at Lin Jue with eyes full of doubt, confusion, bewilderment, and panic.
Lin Jue stood in the middle without saying a word, silently counting the number of students present.
If he remembered correctly, there were a total of 32 students in the class, plus the homeroom teacher Duan Hong, making a total of 33.
Even after this charred corpse appeared, the total number of people remained at thirty-three... not one more, not one less.
