Chapter 693 - 4: Sheng Yi:
Their hearts were both racing, almost losing rhythm, only neither of them could hear it.Sheng Yi clenched her hands so tight her nails were almost digging into her palms. It hurt, but this could keep her rational, right?
But right now she was trapped, torn between the shackles of morality and her own selfish desire. Dao An was someone else’s boyfriend; she couldn’t ask him to stay. Yet if she did keep him here, maybe he would become hers. Even if he didn’t want to stay, she could move out from Gu Yuan’s place—at least he would stay to look after her for Yuanyuan’s sake, right?
But if she did that, the moral line’s shackles would strangle her neck tight.
The more tangled she felt, the more irritable she became. The tip of her nose burned; she was about to be driven to tears by her own anxiety.
"Could you maybe..." She could hardly get the words out.
The man’s voice was gentle. "What is it?"
Sheng Yi bit her lower lip, and when she spoke again there was clearly a sob in her voice. "...I’m scared."
That was as far as she could say it. To ask him to stay, those words really wouldn’t come out, stuck in her throat.
He’d probably just comfort her a bit, tell her not to be afraid or something. Qin Bing had already been taken out of the hotel for now, hadn’t he?!
Just as she was sinking deeper into disappointment—
She saw the man walking toward her, step by step. When he came to stand in front of her, he looked down at her. Their eyes met, and Sheng Yi felt even more wronged; her eyes were red like a little rabbit’s, helpless and pitiful.
She heard him say, "Don’t cry."
She also heard him say, "I won’t leave. I’ll stay with you."
Sheng Yi’s misty eyes widened. The surge of joy actually made her calmer instead. Yes, she couldn’t act too eager or excited. Dao An was only staying because she was afraid. The fact that he was even willing to stay was already not easy.
She forced herself to calm down, bit her lip several times before managing to respond, "Thank you."
He said, "You’re welcome."
Probably because she was afraid he’d go back on his word and slip away once she fell asleep, and also selfishly hoping his girlfriend wouldn’t check in on him tonight—otherwise, having to listen to him talk sweetly on the phone with his girlfriend would be pure torture for her.
She eagerly pointed at the sofa. "I can sleep on the sofa. You sleep on the bed."
Her words earned a helpless, amused chuckle from the man.
When he laughed, she stared fixedly at his face. His handsome features looked stiff, indifferent, and a bit serious when he wasn’t smiling. But when he did, the corners of his lips lifted just slightly—not much, but warm. Fine crow’s feet fanned out at the corners of his eyes, like the fragrance of aged wine brewed over the years—rare, precious, a single sip pouring straight into the heart.
"Miss Sheng Yi, if I let you sleep on the sofa and take the bed myself, how am I supposed to explain that to President Gu if she finds out?" he asked her with a smile.
Without even thinking, Sheng Yi said, "We just won’t tell her."
As soon as she said that, the smile in the man’s eyes deepened. He put his jacket back where it had been, walked over, and his palm landed casually, naturally on the back of her head. "Go sleep in the bedroom. If anything happens, call me. I’ll be outside."
Feeling his palm resting on the back of her head, gently rubbing once, Sheng Yi flushed in embarrassment, bit her lip, and nodded obediently. "Okay."
She turned and walked toward the bedroom. Every few steps she’d stop and look back at him, and only after confirming he was still there would she keep walking, until she finally went into the bedroom.
Watching her disappear into the bedroom, Dao An’s mood sank a little. He knew her dependence right now was all because of what had happened today. He’d been in M Country and hadn’t known about it at all. He only learned that someone had tried to forcefully marry Sheng Yi when he heard President Gu mention it today, and that Sheng Yi didn’t like him, so she’d fled to M Country.
On the phone, although Gu Yuan already knew Dao An had a girlfriend, she didn’t mention it once.
And besides, since Dao An already had a girlfriend, Gu Yuan naturally wouldn’t go out of her way to tell him that Sheng Yi had come to M Country because of him. Dao An was a very responsible man. Saying that would only add another layer of psychological burden on him—on one side was his current girlfriend, on the other was Sheng Yi’s love that had chased him across borders. Without even thinking, with Dao An’s sense of responsibility, of course he would choose to maintain his current relationship; it was just hard on Yiyi and all the feelings she’d thrown herself into.
So on the phone, Gu Yuan only said that this trip to M Country was to hide from Qin Bing.
Thinking of Qin Bing, Dao An recalled the man he’d seen not long ago when he’d barged in with the M Country police.
Although it was his first time seeing this man, he’d heard a bit about that Party Secretary from Hai City.
In terms of sheer rank and power, if Sheng Yi married him in the future, she wouldn’t suffer any grievances. For the Sheng Family, it would be an advantageous marriage. But as for Qin Bing himself—there were too many scandals and affairs. His private life was second only to Mr. Qua’s. The women he’d kept ranged across the entire entertainment industry, from top stars to small-time influencers... If Sheng Yi followed him, it wouldn’t just be "suffering"—it would be a colossal injustice.
Thinking of this, Dao An’s expression grew even darker.
Sheng Yi had fled to M Country to hide from Qin Bing, yet she’d still been found.
If he hadn’t arrived in time tonight, he didn’t dare imagine the consequences...
Every time he thought of that moment by the window, when he’d grabbed Sheng Yi’s wrist, Dao An felt a stabbing pain in his chest and an even stronger lingering fear. He thanked heaven a million times that he’d made it in time, a million times that he’d pulled her back.
He lifted his feet and walked toward the bedroom.
At the bedroom door, he saw the girl standing just inside the doorway, not lying down on the bed to rest, but standing there looking flustered and uneasy.
Their eyes met.
She spoke first, blurting out anxiously, "Can we not close the bedroom door?"
So she’d thought he was coming to close the bedroom door.
He agreed. "Okay, I won’t close it."
Seeing her let out a breath of relief, he frowned, heart aching for her, yet helpless to do anything more.
Reluctantly, she turned back, went to the bed, took off her shoes and climbed on. She wrapped herself tightly in the quilt, only her head sticking out. Her still-damp, thick hair spread over the white pillow, soaking it. Her eyes were wide open, fixed on the doorway.
He hesitated for a moment, then stepped inside.
Looking at the thick white quilt she’d wrapped around herself—it did give a sense of security, yes, but it was too thick; she would definitely get hot.
He personally picked up the thin blanket left forlornly to the side; it was probably what she’d been using these past few days. Holding it, he said, "Use this instead. The quilt on you is too thick. Wrapped that tight, you’ll wake up hot and sweaty in the middle of the night."
Wrapped in the quilt, Sheng Yi shook her head pitifully. "No, I’m scared."
Dao An lowered his voice to soothe her. "I’ll stay here with you. Don’t be scared."
Sheng Yi still shook her head. "A thin blanket doesn’t give me any sense of security."
Dao An pressed his lips together and told her, "But you’ll get too hot. And your hair isn’t dry yet."
His gaze lingered on her hair, and he frowned.
Just then, Sheng Yi suddenly threw back the quilt and sat up. Her neckline fell open with the movement, and as Dao An averted his eyes, he heard the girl say, "If I use the thin blanket... then can you sleep with me?"
His gaze, which had just moved away, snapped back to her.
