Chapter 986 Lawrence's Predicament
Chapter 986 Lawrence's Predicament
Zhang Yunhe slowly stirred his coffee with a spoon, took a sip, and asked, "Where has the lab's work progressed so far?"
Fermi stated, "Even in the early design stages, the work of developing atomic weapons was more tedious and complex than any of us could have imagined, because every task involved a great deal of computation."
Zhang Yunhe took an envelope out of his pocket, placed it on the table, and pushed it over. The envelope was bulging and contained a thick stack of US dollars.
"I heard that although your salary is quite good, you have many girlfriends and are still short of money. Here, take this; you'll receive a sum of money every month from now on!"
"This money will be deposited into this anonymous account, and no password is required for withdrawals. However, do not withdraw all the money at once; always keep at least $100 to ensure the account is not closed."
"What I need you to do is very simple: report the overall research progress of this project to me once a week. Just make this call!"
After Zhang Yunhe finished speaking, he took out a bankbook and a piece of paper with a phone number written on it and placed them on the table.
Fermi picked up the passbook and put it in his pocket, then picked up the slip of paper and glanced at the phone number on it, feeling something was off: "This number is a bit strange."
"Yes, as long as we can get through! By the way, I'm not advising you to break off your relationship with those three women, but it's best to keep it a secret!"
Fermi nodded.
Zhang Yunhe then asked, "Where does the laboratory get its uranium raw material?"
Fermi said, "As far as I know, we have very little usable uranium ore on our own soil. Some good uranium ore is in Canada and the Czech Republic, but the best uranium resources are in the Congo!"
Zhang Yunhe then asked, "After the uranium ore is transported here, it needs to be refined, right? Where is this factory located?"
Fermi nodded and said, "Yes, uranium needs to be refined from ore and its isotopes separated. I've heard that four such factories were built, but I only know of one in Oak Ridge; I don't know about the other three."
"Who is the head of the laboratory? And who is the overall person in charge of the entire atomic weapons research and manufacturing?" Zhang Yunhe asked again.
Fermi replied, "The laboratory director is Julius. He has strong organizational and leadership skills, and he is also a renowned scientist in theoretical physics, quantum mechanics, and nuclear physics. He is highly trusted by the higher-ups!"
"The lab is only responsible for the design. After the design calculations are successful, the factory will manufacture the parts and handle the final assembly. The overall person in charge of the project is Groves."
At this point in the conversation, Fermi had already shared most of what he knew, so Zhang Yunhe didn't continue.
Fermi took the money and left. He knew he couldn't refuse; refusing would mean a terrible death. As long as Zhang Yunhe sent those photos to the husbands of the three women, they would do everything in their power to ensure his demise.
……
Alamos Marie Hospital.
Lawrence was speaking with his wife's attending physician in the doctor's office.
The doctor's words made him feel like the sky was falling.
"Mr. Lawrence, your wife's condition can only be treated with surgery at present, and the success rate of the surgery is only 30%. In addition, the cost of this surgery and subsequent treatment will be very high. You should be mentally prepared!"
Lawrence asked, "Such a low success rate for the surgery? What is the approximate total cost?"
“Around $30!” the doctor said calmly.
Lawrence's heart sank to the bottom: "So much? Aren't there any other treatment options?"
"That's all; this is currently the only relatively effective treatment option."
“This… I need to think about it…” Lawrence said hesitantly.
"Of course, but it's best to make a decision within three days. If you decide to have the surgery, you need to have the $20 surgery fee ready," the doctor said.
Lawrence staggered out of the doctor's office.
He paced back and forth in the corridor outside the ward all afternoon, leaving behind a litter of cigarette butts in the stairwell.
The next day at noon, during his lunch break, he drove to the hospital ward to visit his wife, where his parents had come to take care of her that morning.
"Mr. Lawrence, come to my office for a moment!" The attending physician saw Lawrence as he passed by the ward door.
"Ok!"
Upon arriving at the office, the attending physician smiled and said, "Mr. Lawrence, I'm glad you made the decision to have your wife operated on so quickly. The sooner the better. The surgery will begin at 2 PM tomorrow. You'll need to set aside some time to come and take care of your wife after the surgery, as your parents are quite old!"
"What? I've already decided to have the surgery? How come I didn't know? I haven't even raised the money for the surgery yet!" Lawrence said in surprise.
The attending physician smiled and handed him a slip of paper, saying, "Your friend Musk has paid your surgery fees. Here is his contact information. He wants you to call him!"
Lawrence took the note with a bewildered look, glanced at the phone number on it, and asked himself, "Do I have a friend named Musk?"
He searched his memory but couldn't recall ever having a friend named Musk.
After leaving the doctor's office, he went out of the hospital and onto the street. He found a public phone booth, inserted a coin, and dialed the number on the slip of paper.
"Beep—beep—Hello?" A man's voice came through the phone.
Lawrence asked cautiously, "Excuse me, are you Mr. Musk?"
"It's me. Is Lauren the doctor?" the man on the other end of the phone asked.
Lawrence quickly replied, "Yes, Mr. Musk, I don't seem to remember having a friend named Musk. May I ask who you are?"
There's a coffee shop 200 meters ahead of you. I'll wait for you there. You'll know what I mean when we meet!
Lawrence thought for a moment and agreed, "Okay, I'll be right there!"
After hanging up the phone, Lawrence walked two hundred meters down the street and sure enough, he saw a coffee shop. He went in nervously.
At that moment, a middle-aged man sitting by the window raised his hand and waved to him.
Lawrence looked at the man's face; he didn't recognize him. Then it suddenly occurred to him that a stranger would spend so much money on his wife's surgery; he must have something to do with it.
Given his current work situation, could it be that the other party is after that atomic weapons research project?
With a mix of doubt and nervousness, Lawrence approached Zhang Yunhe.
Zhang Yunhe stood up and extended his hand to Lawrence: "Mr. Lawrence, hello, you can call me Mr. K!"
Lawrence shook hands with Zhang Yunhe and sat down opposite him.
“Mr. K, state your purpose. We are complete strangers. I don’t believe a complete stranger would help me pay such a high surgery fee for no reason!” Lawrence said.
